Brazil vs. Buenos Aires

I have been to Rio and of course loved it and the guys available, etc..can anyone provide a meaningful comparison of the scene/availability of good guys in Buenos Aires - I am thinking of going to BA but not sure if I should just go back to Rio.

Hi, I've done two weeks in Brazil, one in BA for the last two years and loved it totally. Precisely because they contrasted so much. One very south american, one with a touch of europe added to a very distinct combination of cultures. Going from one to the other was half the fun!. Yes sex was more readily available in the former, if you paid for it, but I certainly wasn't starved for attention in BA. I was interested in BA and managed to locate Aquina's "trip report" from last year. They were very interesting posts! For the benefit of anyone who can't find them in the archives I have re-posted it here.

 

HOME ALONE

I just about got home and thought I should post, if not to provide new info, well at least to confirm what others have said, give my impressions, and generally thank others for any assistance given. It wasn't my first visit, so I was no virgin, and what struck me this trip was how comfortable I was this time, maybe even complacent?. I had no sense of danger, and in general spent little time looking over my shoulder. A change from last year, maybe for the better, since some of the energy that that feeling of being in a very foreign land supplies, was gone. I'm not saying it was oldhat, but something seemed missing.

However, I was impressed by the hotel, Atlantico. I have to admit I did at times get the impression, wrongly, that it might be a bit sleazy. Not a bit of it, infact it was the best hotel I've stayed in

in Rio. Sizeable roms, spotless, helpful staff, very centrally located, I mean to the "places". True, since I previously stayed in Ipanema, and consequently build up a relationship with eateries there,I did travel back and forth. I resorted to the buses, couldn't have been easier, or cheaper. A Taxi is a bit dear. I also tried the metro to Gloria, just the once. Very efficient, clean and safe, and sterile and soulless. I much prefer the buses, even at night, even when I got lost last year. My choice.

Oh can I recommend a few places to eat. In the Rua Farme Do Amoedo, and I don't want to hear I misspelt it, La Pulchinella, excellent Italian , and reasonable. Also Pax, check the phone book, very good. In Farme , unless my gaydar is seriouly on the blink, the eaterie Cafinia is seriously gay, and I mean more than the 3 noisey New York queens I suffered brunch adjacent to.

My travels outside Rio I don't want to bore people with, I'll just say I'd recommend Carlos, and certainly want to see Paraty, 4 hours on the bus. The puppet show is a must, and VERY erotic. I left with a hardon, and for a hetro performance!. There's hope yet. Also Ouro Petro, if not the city of Bello Horizonte. Bored me really, that city, but necessary to see OP. Good restaurant in "Books with Food" though.

I tried one sauna there called "Hot House", on a saturday, friday is seemingly better. Rather luke warm, 3 customers and 4 boys, not young either. Not exactly sparkingly clean either.The sauna. Thought I should at least respond concerning BA, if not to inform well at least to acknowledge the assistance of Roberto. A true

gentleman who was only too willing to help, and did. Truely a different city, with a destinctly european feel. Seems to be slightly, from my reading , recovering from last years collapse in the economy, but very reasonable from a european perspective, especially in food, clothes (my visa bill will be coming soon) and hotels. Men, well that's mixed, and I'm now suffering from name fatigue and forgeting them. Thanks for the great posting! Two corrections: the local gay mag is called "Imperio," and the sauna is on Viamonte.

 

I thought the name of the restaurant at the Alvear Palace was "La Bourgogne," but it may have reinvented itself and changed names. Didn't eat there, but everyone seems to agree it's the best, or at least the most expensive place in town. By American/European standards, that's actually quite reasonable.

 

Sounds like you had an excellent time! I'm glad you did; B.A. is very different from Rio, but it's definitely one of the world's great cities and one of my absolute favorites! I'm also glad to hear Roberto was able to be helpful to you!

I had to smile when I scrolled Aquino's post; it's rather long, so I'll wait to reread it. Yes, I read his wonderful post after he'd posted it almost a year ago. Because of its contents and the responses from other respondents about Buenos Aires, I've made up my mind that I must experience "The Paris of the South" before too long.

 

I'd planned to take a trip there this October but the date that Roberto will be available doesn't correspond with my dates, so I'm going to RIo and Sao Paulo, and before May of 2005, I truly hope that I'd be able to venture to Buenos Aires and a few other areas of Argentina.

 

So, I'd advise the originator of the post to go there as well as to Brasil again!

I've been to both Rio and Buenos Aires. Truthfully, I went to Rio about 20 years ago with a partner, so my experience there was different than if I had been single and indulging in the scene there. I liked Rio very much, but it's more like resort than a city, at least that was my impression of it then. Buenos Aires is like going to Europe and it is definitely an urban experience. Buenos Aires is beautiful, cultural, chocked full of things to see and do, boasts outstanding restaurants, has fine museums, and is a shopper's paradise (because of their economies, both cities are an excellent bargain for Americans and Europeans).

 

As for the men, Buenos Aires will make your head swim. The city is chocked full of gorgeous guys, and whether you pay for a session or not, you'll be very happy to you went. There are good sites to find very attractive men. A session is generally about $35 for an hour (amazing). I found a great guy and saw him often during my stay. Though he's retired, we've exchanged e-mails often and will defintely stay friendly.

 

I urge you to hire Roberto. Besides his excellent knowledge of the city and his abilities to engage you during a walk through the Recoleta or Bario Norte, Roberto can find a gay tango class, a cooking school, that perfect restaurant, or a place to find a wonderful pair of shoes. He is thoroughly knowledgeable about his beautiful city, it's cultural activities, its architecture, and it's citizenry.

 

I will go back to Rio sometime soon and I'm sure I'll have a wonderful time. Both cities have their allure. But I will return to Buenos Aires again and again. I love cities (I most often vacation in cities rather than in resorts--it is just a preference), and Buenos Aires is a city lover's paradise.

I've been in november 2003 in Buenos Aires about a week. Then I visited the south of the country which is wonderfull.

 

Regarding gay life however, it is difficult to compare with Brazil !

 

Argentina is more like Europe. Disco are full of nice peoples but it is mostly "normal" gay entertainment. You will go with a guy if you likes him and he likes you. The are,of course some hustler but by far not so many than in the brazilian Sauna.

 

I rented a very nice appartment (about 100 square metter) in an elegant house for less than the price I would have paid in a 3 stars hotel room. I was right in the part of the city where we could find gay prostitution. About 10 boys were available, no more. And I brought to bed 2 twenty years old brazilian wgo were there to learn spanish. They were the cutest of the street.

There are working guys at the Titanic bar, on Av. Callao near Av. Santa Fe. You'll find street hustlers at night on M.T. de Alvear (locally known by it's old name of Charcas), the street parallel to Av. Santa Fe one block away from the river, between Av. Callao and Av. Pueyrredón. The street guys tend to be a bit grim, at least for my taste. There are also hustlers hanging around outside Contramano some nights, and in and around the café El Olmo at the corner of Santa Fe and Pueyrredón.

 

I'm sure out "old Argentine hands" will also weigh in with some other locations!

If you go to the "South of the Border FAQ" section at the top of the list of threads and just poke around a bit, all will be revealed to you. Remember that Roberto in BA is a guide while Carlo in Rio is a travel agent. Roberto will personally guide you around and has a set fee for his time, I understand. Carlo makes his real income as a travel agent, booking hotels, tours etc for his predominately gay clientele. He also does personal tours on occasion for which he also has a set fee.
