RE: Santa Teresa apts

I`m impressed of the amount of considerations you all can put on the matter of living in Sta Teresa, and I have to thank all of you because you was able to interpeter my feelings and desires.

I lived 20 days in Catete and I know it and Gloria better, now. They are nice, even if they have the chaos of traffic and pollution.

The uildings are nice to me, because I can see the potential of a beautiful recover of the place for decades. The building in Barra and Ipanema are new and confortable, but they well be destroied and dismissed in 20 years, when a newer district will be the centre of real estate and business and chic nightlife. But the ancient buildings in Catete, Gloria and Sta Teresa will remain precious testimony of the ages, like the best building in Italy, Spain, France and Portugal.

Yes, I know that the visibility of your living determins the level of possibly risk. My disires is of a low level form of living, having a house in an ancient district who reminds me to european history an architecture, avoiding the routes of mdernity and the hassles of civilisation. In my house in Sta Teresa I imagine to read a lot, breath some air that seem less polluted than in, say, Copa or central trafficated areas, with less noises from cars and a good view. From Sta Teresa I imagine to go biking to the Corcovado and Tijuca area in the forest. I image to invite sometimes my friends, have a tea or a beer, cook spaghetti, listen to music, even play saxophone without annoying neighborhood. Then sometimes go out to town, move by old little scooter without suffering if or when it could be theft or not. And, if I can do all this in Sta Teresa at a rasonable cost, with a possibly improving value of my investment (on long trm basis), this sound good to me.

Of course I know my desires, and have to walk a lot before being enough aknowledged of Rio and the application of my dreams at Rio.

In the meanwhile, thanks for helping the clarifiation of my thoughts.

... and if or when finally ready, I will buy a 20 kilos casserole for cooking large amount of spaghetti !

Grazie mille

CHRIS

Some people do like living in Sta. Teresa, so obviously not everything about is is bad. You seem to have spent some time there, so that's an advantage because you already have some understanding of the neighborhood. As long as you realize that there IS a crime situation in the area, and that safety is an issue, you may find that living there is OK. Just be sure you're clear about what you're getting into if you buy a place in Sta. Teresa. If you are only planning to be in Brazil part of the year, one of the things to think about very carefully is security for your place when you're away for long periods. Break-ins are common, especially in individual houses where there's nobody to keep an eye on the place when you're away. That's one reason I've gotten a place in a high-rise building with 24-hour doormen. It reduces the risk.

as for sta teresa: GO FOR IT.

absolutely. it is special indeed and you seem the type of individual who wld really enjoy it. you are are aware of the security issues and wld take the necessary precautions.

i have close friends who own a villa in sta teresa and have visited them over the years whenever i am in rio. they have never had a security related problem over the last 25 years, and neither have i in visiting them over the last 5. they obviously have adequate security arrangements -and good relations with the neighbors.

they throw some of the best parties in rio in their hilltop gardens with hundreds of guests, hire live musicians by the pool, and don't get noise complaints from the neighbors (most of whom are at the parties). they enjoy and buy artwork from the neighborhood galleries.

they own a car, getting to copa is a 10-15 min drive.

btw just visited italy for the first time - spent just over a month there - and can now see where you're coming from. asolo sounds great and will check out next visit. the best part of italy for me were all those small hilltowns with so much history.

conclusion: by all means, with the proper security arrangements, GO FOR IT. keep us posted

RE: Santa Teresa apts

I wanna thanks you all for the precious advices and the help you give to my ideas.

Yes, once you see the thousand small italian cities over the hills, called "borghi" or "borghi medievali" who made the medieval ages so famous, you ask yourself everyday whay we abandoned these human dimension cities, or if we can imagine to built our volunteer lives in such a pleasent way.

As for myself, I will try. And Sta Teresa reminds to an european borgo, as the ancient portogueses seemed to intend.

I think that the contacts and the feeling perceptions between people would also be improved by a less chaotic sorroundings.

But I understand that this is just my personal point of view, where others of you would long for crowds and spersonalization as a help for hunting or a cure for boredom.

I feel myself somehow less an individual inside a crowded and noisy discoteque, maybe because of my european culture I use to connect joy with places and people. I export this habit abroad and I use to discuss with my old and new friends about how-where and when our lives are different, why and if each one could gain some profit from the specific opportunities which the other is blessed with. (excuse my difficuld periphrares)

I admit that, once I met a new escort or friend in Brasil, or everywhere in the world before, I try to imagine if I can share enlarged experiences with him, out of sex, to indeep the relationship and consolidate the friendship, and for this intent a house which contains and express your culture and personality is a sure help and an appropriate place.

And the reason why I like the less civilized countries is that I feel the perception that they still have enough space and time to spend in doing simple thing, like wait, talk, suffer and enjoy. Things that the developed and high-running civilized countries seem to have alreaydy sold off.

After the discoverers of new lands, also the discoverers of new times and relationships could have social and hisctorical importance.

Will post further details.

Grazie ancora

CHRIS
