Did I miss something here? The average temperature for Rio is supposed to be in the 80's as summer begins, but it has been 99 degrees for a few days.

That sounds awfully hot to be going to the sauna! Is this an unusual weather spell? What can I expect in January?

It's a weird weather year everywhere. It's a bit early still for 99º weather in Rio, at least in a normal year, but by January and February, which are like July and August in the Northern Hemisphere, temperatures of 40ºC (104º) aren't uncommon. On the beach, of course, there's a bit of a breeze, but usually even for Cariocas, who adore heat, this is a bit much. They'd rather hang at an air-conditioned mall or movie theater! At the saunas, there may not be much going on in the steam room/sauna, but there'll be guys cruising around. You can always take cold (actually tepid) showers to cool off, and some of the private cabins have air-conditioners, so you don't get too hot and sweaty while engaging in strenuous activities. ;-) People also wait until later in the evening to do stuff, after the sun has gone down and the temperature drops a bit.

Just be sensible about going out in the noonday sun on days that are that hot, stay hydrated (bottled water is available everywhere, as is Gatorade and other soft drinks) and wear lots of filmy, gauzy outfits. . . It may seem awful the first day or two, but you'll find you get used to the climate fairly quickly. Especially when you realize that the heat is an excuse for all those gorgeous guys to parade around Copacabana and Ipanema wearing as little as the law will let them get away with! :9 You'll be so busy admiring the scenery you probably won't even notice the heat!!!

January/February can be stiflingly, unbearably hot, average 40-45 degrees Celsius during a 24 hour period is not uncommon. If one is not used to extreme oppressive heat avoid being outdoors during the daytime. In my case, I would just remain in my airconditioned hotel, or hang out/cruise/kill time in shopping malls, movie houses, eateries etc. any cool place. Take aircon taxis/buses when travelling about town. One nice outdoor venue is the Jardim Botanico which is a great place to explore alone or with someone special, lots of shady areas. The bathouses usually open at 3.00 p.m. and it's not a bad idea to be there early and to relax in the bar, watch porno videos, read magazines, and check out the hotties as they come in. If you have to use one of the in-house cabins verify first if it's airconditioned as it can be very uncomfortable indeed unless you like it sweaty. If I recall right, Club 117's are aircon, but Rogers or Estacao only have fans. Yes, as mentioned, you'll see hordes of young, gorgeous, mouthwatering specimens roaming around the city in revealing swimming attire and that alone makes it worth suffering such heat in Rio.
