Don't know if everyone has heard about it, but there's nasty new virus out there called NIMDA.....I had email from my Internet Service Provider who indicated that it is wreaking havoc on lots of folks on the Windows side of computing. Guess, I'm lucky, I have a Power Mac and it doesn't seem to affect Mac users. NIMDA has managed to take down my favorite escort agency's site, as I spoke with them by phone yesterday. They were hoping to be back up and running today, but no dice.

Anyone else experiencing problems?

I spoke to our third-party IT provider today about it. They had one client hit so bad that they were down for 2 days. They actually had to reformat their server because the virus kept duplicating files faster than they could delete them.

It's a nasty virus. Hope everyone is practicing "safe" surfing and has up-to-date anti-virus software AND a backup of files.

OF ALL THE PLACES FOR ME TO GET THE VIRUS WAS FROM STEF'S WEBSITE, BUT THANKFULLY NORTON ANTI-VIRUS QUICKLY FIXED IT. I CAN THINK OF BETTER THINGS TO CATCH FROM THE FRENCH CROISSANT! :)

We got the virus just maybe 15 min before they even announced it on the radio and TV. We also had to reformat everything and it took us 2 days to be fixed.

Now I'm on travel and away and the server is working perfectly, but it seems that my computer is infected ...AGAIN !!!

I'm sorry for the inconveniences but now it is fixed.

hugs

Actually, I'd recommend it to anyone. You might be surprised at the number of intruder attempts it reports, even on dial-up.

The important point, though, it to use SOME form of firewall. It can be implemented as software (as mentioned above) or in my case it is provided by my DSL router. (I actually ran ZoneAlarm while behind the router for a while, and it reported no intruder attempts so I'm fairly confident in the router.)

A really good site for covering security and protection issues is Steve Gibson's http://www.grc.com.

Yes it is. McAfee is virus protection. ZoneAlarm is a personal firewall. They are two entirely different (and necessary) things.

A virus scanner protects you from opening infected files already on your computer, or from downloading infected files. A firewall protects you from outsiders exploiting your computer without your knowing it, which is becoming more and more common.

This is important folks, and it will become VITALLY IMPORTANT once Windows XP becomes common. You don't want to have the FBI knocking on your door because you unknowingly participated in a Denial Of Service attack on the White House. That's one of the things firewalls protect you from. Virus protection won't cover you there.

I had the McAfee originally installed from Dell , and had no problem at all installing "Zone Alarm" . Is truly a great program , runs in the back , and needs little memory

( by the way , for the "tekno-freaks" like me , there are a bajillion lights , with pretty colors ! ) *wink*

Check with your DSL provider and see if they are already providing firewall protection. Many do, or offer it as an addon. (for extra $$$ natch)

Lacking that, ask your DSL provider how to configure a personal firewall to use their service. There is absolutely nothing about ZoneAlarm, as is, that precludes access to a DSL connection.

Many DSL providers dislike allowing customers to use firewalls, NAT, etc., because it opens the door to using multiple computers on a single connection. They are slime. You should be able to use the bandwidth you purchase from them in the manner which best suits your needs. And you for damn sure should be able to protect yourself behind a firewall if none is provided.
