Go to Microsoft Word.

Type in NYC in upper case letters.

Increase the font size.

With it selected, change the font to "wingdings."

Yikes!

Your mileage may vary if you're not using the US version of Word.

My favorite Word foible was in the original WinWord 2.0. It was released before anyone heard of the Pentium chip. The spell checker would suggest "Penis" in place of "Pentium". ;-)

That is truly disturbing.

Unbelievable that something like this could ever get distributed, obviously not an accident.

I know that almost every program ever created has all kinds of hidden easter eggs (I think they are called) but something like this leaves no questions as to the programmers beliefs. SAD SAD SAD

I got an e-mail message today to type Q33NYC and then convert it to wingdings. I don't have Word, but wingdings is the same in Wordperfect.

I know what NYC is....not sure if Q33 means anything, but it looks impressive in wingdings.

Oh, for gosh sakes... <sigh>

There is no "secret message" here. Wingdings is just a font made up of a whole lot of symbols. It's been around for years and years and years. It has nothing to do with Word or WordPerfect or any other particular word processor.

Since there is one Wingding character for every key on the keyboard (both capital and lower-case), you can combine the symbols in lots of ways to make "secret messages" -- something I thought only adolescents got a kick out of. For example, typing JOY in capital letters gives you the following:

JOY

There is no evil intent here -- just someone with way too much idle time trying to get computer novices more worked up than they already are.

It's time to stop seeing evil where there is no evil and pull together and support each other for a change.

once again, the slightest charge of anti-Semitism is furiously rejected.

am i surprised? no, not at all. do i still feel a slight twinge of pain anyway? of course.

Couldn't agree with you more. And as it is clearly demonstrated here many times, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

DC -

Just as you spell any kind of message using the characters in the Times Roman font, you can use the pictures in the Wingdings font to build a variety of pictorial messages.

I have no idea what was in the mind of the person who originally created the "NYC" message. I do suspect that, like all of the people calling in fake bomb threats, it was someone who wanted a little attention or perhaps to try to make people more upset.

Was this person anti-semitic? Who knows?

But for people to then stretch this into a case of it being a "Secret Message" hidden inside Word, showing an evil intent of the product's designers, is non-sensical.

As I have said before and will happily say again, anti-semitism, like all bigotry, is plain stupid and should be flat-out rejected be all people. The same thing goes for the bigotry that is being hurled at Muslims these days. No one should accept bigotry.

But, having said that, we need to sensible, too. Looking at a message composed of Wingdings and then finding some evil intent created by the product's designers doesn't help anyone.

Bigotry, when it's real, should be roundly rejected by all of us. Trying to find it at every turn, especially in atmosphere already highly charged, is counterproductive.

I will once again say that I think we need to calm down, realize that everyone is under a lot of stress, that there are lots of very strong emotions right now, and the best thing that every single one of us can do to help is to give the people around him a lot of leeway. When people are upset, they say things they regret later. Understanding goes a long way.

well, that's certainly strange. I think you're right, Boston Guy, someone DOES have too much time on their hands.

Ethan, some of the symbols in Wingdings are also crosses, so if I were to use the abbreviation for Nevada (NV) I would get this:

NV

I don't suspect any evil intent here, as Wingdings has been around forever, but I certainly wouldn't put it past anyone either!

BG: Thank you for your continued calm, well reasoned responses. In these difficult days, you repeatedly are able to state your sound views in a very calm manner that is helping to moderate the tone of posts on this board. Thanks for your contributions.
