Did anyone see the Music Video Awards which was taped at Lincoln Centre? Canadian network MuchMusic decided not to broadcast it due to the tragedy in NYC, but its french Canadian counterpart, MusiquePlus, did on Sunday night.

Although I am very open minded and love to look at sexy people, men especially, I was in horror over how very tasteless this extraganza was. The clothing, the nakedness, the lines of the stars was appauling, not just because of the events of the past week but that certainly heightened my disgust of this show and frankly the marketing machinery behind it.

If my attitude is anything like most other peoples, I am afraid we are in for a new period of conservatism, and I am afraid of that. I love to watch a sexy man, to see him dressed in a sexy way, but this show was way over the top, or show I say hit a new low in vulgarity. This is just the kind of thing that drives fundamentalist against America. The music industry should be ashamed of itself.

Unfortunately i would think that you were probably in the wrong demographic for MTV (Unless you are between the age of 12 and 25 then i apologise !)

The music industry has never been known for being tasteful as far as i can recall, shows like the VMA's are essentially marketing tools to sell CD's and concert tickets and that there is such a cut throat market out there especially for the type of age group that MTV covets that artists and record companies with do almost ANYTHING to get themselves to the top of the pile,I know before the show that Britney Spears had been criticised in some quarters for the animals that she was going to use in her performance but it got exactly what it set out to do,to get her into the headlines(nothing to do with the fact that she has a new single/album due HEAVEN FORBID ).The music biz is a multi billion dollar industry and whether it be vulgar, crass, over sexual it helps to shift units.

I guess my question is, "what particulars did you find so offensive?" Was it Britney's sexy dance number?.....(which Madonna started doing nearly 20 years ago?) Was it the host's jabs and digs at members of the music community?....(which pretty much EVERY host has done since the awards show inception.) Was it Michael Jackson's green/grey skin and orange lipstick?...( okay, Ill give you that)

To me, the show was pretty lack-luster, and that WAS exactly the problem in my eyes...NOTHING SHOCKED ME!!!!! Well..seeing Janet in a mini skirt for the first time ever.... I found myself acheing for a flash of private parts, or a fist fight between Christina Aguilera and Daphne Aguilera...but there I was, so bored out of my mind, that I called friends. I didnt find anything distasteful...except for the lack of effort to entertain. And as for seeing sexy men on the Video Music Awards Show.....thats like looking for a drag queen in an Amish community.....aint gonna happen.

Oh..I almost forgot......Conservatives are always waiting to attack, and the awful events of the past week, will only give them free reign to deem EVERYTHING thats not snow white Christian as a cause for what happened....( ala Jerry Falwells reasoning of the terrorism as Gods anger on gays,feminists,abortionists....)

I, for one, WILL NOT allow a "new age of conservatism" into MY life. The true damage on America is NOT sexy award shows, sensational media, pornography, strip clubs, and gossip columns. The true damage is when "religious leaders" brain wash weak minded individuals who are unable to form their own opinions to judge, hate, and dictate others choices. Well...Im not weak, I AM able to form my own opinions, and I dont need some out of touch, bible belt, holier than though telling me what is "morally right" as they slip into a back road county bumpkin hotel to fuck a hooker for 40.00.

<<ala Jerry Falwells reasoning of the terrorism as Gods anger on gays,feminists,abortionists...>>

That's backfiring on him, big time. And he's backpeddling on it.

As has been pointed out on another website, the only people who think Americans caused this attack on America are Jerry Falwell and Osama Bin Laden.

I suspect he's done more to damage his cause than to help it.

YAY! :-)

RE: Video Music Awards---just the ticket

Johhny, when did you get old? You sound like my father! I enjoyed the show very much. It was just the distraction I needed after all the non-stop coverage of the horror.

And deej, I agree with you big time about Falwell and Robinson. I have a few friends that are conservative Christians 9yeah, go figure) and they were thoroughly embarrassed by those comments.

i'm conservative and jewish, so i think you're a bit off-base. being conservative isn't jerry falwell's crime; being a hypocritical bigot is.

let's at least get it right. decrying "THOSE DAMNED CONSERVATIVES" is no better than decrying "THOSE PERVERTED FAGS"... think about it.

RE: Video Music Awards---just the ticket

The MTV Video Music Awards show was taped nearly two weeks before

the World Trade Center terrorist attack and aired here the week prior. I thought it was relatively boring. Michael Jackson has turned himself into such a freak and the N'SYNC boys danced circles around his tired old bony bleached white ass.

Each year the VMAs has become an event where the so-called "celebrities" try to outdo each other with their skimpy costumes. Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson...now that was scary.

I kept flipping back and forth to see if ANYTHING interesting was happening, but no. I can't wait for the day when hip-hop

and baggy pants go away. I say bring back disco and tight pants where you could see a guy's business.

My dear pal Ethan:

You know my liberal inclinations, so you may be a bit shocked that I'm in agreement with you that, as you say, Falwell's crime is not his conservatism, but his hypocrisy and bigotry. I can live with conservatism and liberalism that is thoughtful and reasoned. What I have trouble with is extremism, on both the right and left.

Sending an big internet hug to Ethan ((((((Ethan))))))))

My best friend of over 10 years is a born again Christian. She, however, is able to temper her religious and social views with kindess, humanity, and a sense of humor. I have no issue with those that are kind and conservative...its just such a rare combo.

RE: Video Music Awards---just the ticket

Read what I said carefully in my original post. I was as much afraid of the new conservatism that this brought out in me. I am not a bigot, and resent any suggestion that I am. Any one that knows me knows this is not the case. However, this Awards Ceremony was not about ceremony as it was about blatant promotion and it was using sex as a tool in marketing. There is nothing really new here, and the costumes most were dressed in was "nouveau hooker". Women mostly, but men, presumably people with some talent, were exposed not for their talent but for their sexuality.

I found its timing to be totally inappropriate and furthermore I found the whole thing to be distasteful, vulgar, and degrading. Perhaps I am alone in this view, but I believe there is a time and a place for sex and pornography (both of which I enjoy greatly) but not as a mass merchandised commodity in order to sell records.

This kind of decadent imagery is what drives the fundamentalist zealots mad. They generalize that all Americans are like this. I believe it does nothing constructive to the American image abroad, esp in Islamic nations. I realize my comments will be rejected by many, but I feel entitled to express my opinion.
