I don't see where a misunderstanding of how non-insular an Asian family may be can be construed as racist. If this is how you and Tommy Tam want to interact in private, that is certainly up to the two of you, but why expose others to it in a public forum where it is open to misinterpretation?

Why is everyone you disagree with, both here and on other forums KKK? Do you even know anything about the history/policies of the KKK, or is it just your buzz word of the day? Oh, dear. Some people certainly are quick to cry "racist" these days. Almost as bad as "pinko-commie" in the McCarthy era.

 

I can assure you that my comment was not motivated by racism, or even ignorance. Actually, I do know quite a bit about the Chinese diaspora and their patterns of emigration over the past several hundred years.

 

I am not saying it is IMPOSSIBLE for Tommy's family to have emigrated from China to Japan, and from there to Vietnam, Hong Kong, and finally the US. I'm just saying that it would be so atypical (and tragic) as to be very, very highly unlikely.

 

The other scenario -- that different branches of his family emigrated to Japan, Vietnam, and Hong Kong -- and that they stayed in contact over many decades so as to recount their experiences with the bomb in Nagasaki and Agent Orange in Vietnam, is equally unlikely -- but again, not impossible.

 

A far more likely scenario is that the original poster either made up or misremembers the Nagasaki and Vietnam stories. Otherwise, perhaps Tommy just spins a good yarn.

 

PS: If "my little houseboy Tommy" and his "chopsticks" isn't racist, it is certainly in extremely poor tast.
