Headin' up to San Francisco
For the Labor Day weekend show
I got my Hush Puppies on
I guess I never was meant for glitter rock and roll
And honey, I didn't know
That I'd be missin' you so

Growing up in Oklahoma and then after living in the Southwest, I thought of Labor Day as a sort of end-of-summer festival without much connection to labor.  Then I moved to a midwestern city with a strong labor union presence and Labor Day looked entirely different there.  There, I saw a parade that absolutely featured floats and marching groups from each of the major trade unions.  I remember parade entries from IBEW, Teamsters, and all the other major unions.  I worked for the fire department then.  I was surprised that the city cooperated and allowed the local from the International Association of Firefighters to use a city fire engine for the parade.
