“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care."

The acclaimed actor had been a feature of television and cinema for almost 50 years. He was also the operator of a quirky farm in Central Otago, where he also produced high quality cool climate wines under the Two Paddocks label. I was lucky enough to be able to buy a case of their 2018 Pinot Noir several years ago.

I think I can feel a movie marathon coming on.

Always an interesting performer to watch closely, even in films that didn't deserve such finesse.  In The Hunt for Red October, Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, James Earl Jones and Scott Glenn are blustering away to beat the band, but Sam Neill gives a lovely and very quiet performance.  If he's on screen, even in the background, I'm watching him.  Thank you, Mr. Neill, for all your work.  Rest in peace.

In the last few days, along with the justifiable praise and happy reminiscences, there has been speculation about the cause of his death. The family decided to clear the air.
