BSR Posted July 9 Posted July 9 The biggest tournament of the tennis calendar deserves its own thread, don’tcha think? Second only to betting on the sun rising in the east, one could comfortably predict that Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic would reach the semifinals, with the fourth spot fill-in-the-blank. Jannik might have been saved by the skin of his teeth, or rather by a tear in Dimitrov’s pectoral muscle, given that he was down 2 sets to love when Grigor had to retire with a heartbreaking injury. Both Carlos and Novak have lost sets along the way, but neither has ever been in serious risk of elimination. As a die-hard Novak fan, I would love to see him pull a rabbit out of a hat by upsetting the world #1 then the defending champion to win his 8th Wimbledon (tying Federer’s record) and 25th Slam (breaking his tie with Margaret Court), but that 1-2 combo is more like pulling a Volkswagen out of a hat. I'm predicting a hard-fought win for Sinner over Djoker, an easy win for Alcaraz over Taylor Fritz (who has improved a lot but not nearly enough to beat Carlos, especially on grass), then Carlos notching his 6th straight win over Jannik for his 3rd straight Wimbledon. But hey, to borrow from the immortal wisdom of Joaquín Andújar, you can sum up tennis in one word: “you never know”
AtticusBK Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Hmmmm…Djoker’s last couple of matches have been much closer than I thought they would be. I’m expecting / hoping that Sinner will slaughter him (and that he’ll finally retire at the end of the year), as a die-hard anyone-but-Djoker fan. Don’t get me wrong — I think his game and what he does for lesser ranked players is amazing, but I can’t stand anything else about him. I’m hoping Sinner gets some revenge on Carlitos in the final after losing all of those match points in the French final, but can’t say I’m confident he or anyone can beat CA on grass right now. And Fritz — snore. The American men’s drought will continue for a long while unless Shelton can amp it up a lot more. As for the women, a Sabalenka / Swiatek final would be great, esp if they both bring their A game. I’m pulling for Sabalenka to take it all after her tough losses in the last 2 major finals. Her best beats everyone else’s right now — as long as she holds it together emotionally.
+ Charlie Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Novak's cancellation of his practice matches for the semi is not a good sign. He took a very awkward-looking fall near the end of his quarter-final, and there is speculation that he may have injured himself, which will make it really difficult for him to beat Sinner. I happened to see one of Taylor's first pro matches (I was with a close friend of mine, who was a friend of Taylor's mother), and he has come a lot farther than I expected, but I think that if Carlitos is at the top of his game, Taylor probably will not make the final. I wouldn't make a prediction about the final until I see what happens in both semis.
Andy768 Posted July 11 Posted July 11 I think Fritz will take at least a set off of Alcaraz, and I don't think an upset is completely out of the question. But I am pulling for Carlitos and Carota!

ESPN's camera angle catching Grigor coming out in tears when he had to retire was so sad. I don't know if it makes me a lech and/or a sadist, but I admit that I thought he looked so adorable.
mike carey Posted July 12 Posted July 12 6-0 6-0, not what anyone wanted or hoped for. BSR and + Charlie 1 1
TonyDown Posted July 12 Posted July 12 According to the TV comments, Swiatek had never advanced past the quarterfinals. Glad I don't gamble. I would lose my shirt on the Women's draw.

TonyDown Posted July 13 Posted July 13 Sinner was on! Will Alcaraz and Sinner achieve a legendary rivalry like Federer/Nadal? The Princess of Wales looked stunning during the trophy ceremony. 🙏🏻 Watching this tournament, what struck me was the level of sportsmanship displayed, especially the kind words from both Anisimova and Alcatraz after losing. + Charlie, thomas and mike carey 3
