Now at the Met in NYC. I beautiful show of art at the dawn of the Italian Renaissance. Besides paintings there are sculptures, gold work and fabrics. But it’s the paintings that got my attention. While religious in nature I like them for the strange and surreal compositions and imagery.

Some amazing works! On a recent visit to the National Gallery of Victoria I spent some time in a couple of galleries of art from a similar period. Many were on a theme of the Cult of Saint Katherine, including both semi-iconic images and other narrative art of her persecution and torture. It was interesting to observe both the art for itself and to reflect on the overwhelmingly religious nature of it, and also on the contrast between the iconography of art in Orthodox Christianity and the art in later Latin rite Christianity.

This reminds me of a Horrible Histories sketch about Giotto (based on the television show "Googlebox") where families are looking at some of Giotto's work and comment on one painting saying that it makes them feel sad for the "ikkle baby Jesus on his own"
