Meanwhile, I received a message on Whatsapp saying hi and asking me for preferred method of payment.

"Who are you?"

He sent me a screen shot of our text.

The WhatsApp message was a different phone number, so he could have started off saying hi this is my other number.

But because he had not mentioned the deposit on the text, I had no idea who it was with the different phone number.

Probably nothing, just seems off.

No. If he had mentioned in his text message that he requires a deposit, I would have been okay with it. But very weird vibe that the WhatsApp message came from another phone with a totally different area code and had no message expanding who it was.
