Expenses when traveling with a provider

So I'm doing my first travel engagement with a provider. Here's my question: is it appropriate to give him cash to pay for expenses like dinner or drinks for the 2 of us? Or should I simply pay for everything myself?

He is your guest, so you should pick up the bill for all expenses, dinner, drinks, Uber, event tickets etc.

Unsure if by asking  that you're implying that you are traveling as a providing duo, or have someone that is your chosen company. If the former, going Dutch would seem to be the most sense. If he's there as your company, any and (nearly) all expenses should be covered by you.

I don’t understand your question. Are you asking if you can give him the money to pay for expenses so it makes it look like he’s the one paying?

I pay for everything.  It might be nice to give them extra folding money for incidentals.  They want to run into a store and grab a snack or some such.  I have actually had providers ask me for money so they could buy dinner or a gift for me.  A bit odd on it's face, but whatever.

I picked up everything for one of my favorite providers who I travelled out of the country with, but he surprised me with a gift from his own money.  If you pick everything up, I wouldn't worry about extra spending money -- they're making enough.
