It was a cruise boat hired for excursions on Lake Michigan.....docked on the south side of the river between Clark and LaSalle, modifications had made it top-heavy when overloaded......2500 Western Electric employees and family members, many recent immigrants, had loaded onto the boat early in the morning to head for a much-anticipated company-sponsored picnic in Indiana........the ship began to list to port (away from the wharf) by 7:10am and fully rolled onto its side by 7:28am, trapping many below deck in the 20' deep river.......

Damn shame, if only it had rolled toward the wharf rather than outward into the river there might have been enough time for a full evacuation.
