+ azdr0710 Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 It was a cruise boat hired for excursions on Lake Michigan.....docked on the south side of the river between Clark and LaSalle, modifications had made it top-heavy when overloaded......2500 Western Electric employees and family members, many recent immigrants, had loaded onto the boat early in the morning to head for a much-anticipated company-sponsored picnic in Indiana........the ship began to list to port (away from the wharf) by 7:10am and fully rolled onto its side by 7:28am, trapping many below deck in the 20' deep river....... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Eastland https://abcnews.go.com/US/chicago-ship-footage-discovered-1915-disaster-killed-844/story?id=28918610 https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/eastland-disaster-killed-more-passengers-titanic-and-lusitania-why-has-it-been-forgotten-180953146/
CuriousByNature Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 According to urban legend, Jack Benny was either on the ship or had planned to be on the ship. I'm just glad that Keith Richards was nearby and helped get a number of people to safety.
+ sync Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 Damn shame, if only it had rolled toward the wharf rather than outward into the river there might have been enough time for a full evacuation.
