The NY Times had an article on Alaska recently that discussed

the lopsided male:female ratio there and its effects on

(straight) dating. Women contemplating going to Alaska to

take advantage of the preponderance of men were said to have

second thoughts because Alaskan men were believed not to be

like those in the lower 48; the saying was "the odds are

good, but the goods are odd".

 

On the other hand, the saying among the men having a hard

time keeping a mate was "you didn't lose your girl, you lost

your turn".
