Prince Nikolai was born at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on 28 August 1999. He is the oldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and her late husband, Prince Henrik. Originally styled "His Highness Prince Nikolai of Denmark", Nikolai's style was expanded on 29 April 2008 to "His Highness Prince Nikolai of Denmark, Count of Monpezat". In September 2022, Queen Margethe II decided to strip the children of her son Joachim from their princely status. From 1 January 2023, Nikolai will be known as "His Excellency Count Nikolai of Monpezat". Nikolai said he was "shocked and confused" when he learned about the decision.

I suspect the Queen is cutting down the number of her grandchildren who hold the title of prince or princess to those with a realistic chance of ascending to the throne. Crown Prince Frederik has four children so it is unlikely that Joachim or his son Nikolai will ever do so. Frederik is likely in time be succeeded by Prince Christian.
