Not an absolutely auspicious name if you have some knowledge of Australian, in particular Tasmanian, colonial history, admittedly with a different spelling of his last name. Long story short, Pearce escaped with several companions from the penal station at Macquarie Harbour on the west coast of Tasmania. His companions were intended for, and used as his rations for the arduous cross-country journey to Hobart.

With that back story I'd have chosen another name.
