I appreciate your advice. Of course I have no idea what a VPN is. Is it something you buy or is it available on the web?

A VPN is a virtual private network. You log into it, and then connect to the web with your regular browser while logged in. Your traffic is then encrypted. Google the term - literally hundreds of providers out there. Varying levels of cost - you decide what you want to pay.
