You are right about this. It leans towards negative, but there can be valid reasons for such a change. Personally, it is not disqualifying, but it comes with additional due diligence imho.

I'd say it depends on the person, but like @down_to_business said doing extra due diligence is the way to go when that happens. There was just a post on this same thing, and IMO the name change in that situation was more of a personal branding/marketing decision.
