Going to NYC for a weekend. Any thoughts on hotels? Not too expensive but clean, quiet, comfortable. Not too familar with Manhattan, so don't really know what part of town to stay in. Probably East Village Midtown? Thanks!

I'm not sure this exists in Manhattan depending upon your definition of not too expensive. Most of the majors will run $200/night or higher, depending on occupancy level, and the closer you get to Xmas the worse it gets. Anybody knows of a little gem share the wealth. The Howard Johnson Plaza, which is on 8th at about 53rd , not in the area requested, is probably the best value/quality ratio I've seen.

Watch out for the HoJo Plaza...there were discussions a month ago that the police operated a prostitution sting at the Plaza. Try the Quality Inn in Broadway or the Best Western President. NYC is getting very, very expensive.

I hear that the new amsterdam on the upper west side is nice, and a bargain. Never been, but they hv a website at http://www.amsterdaminn.com/

There's also one called the Ameritania, I think, midtown just north of times square. (50th?)

There are two hotel booking websites that provide great rates: travelscape.com and hoteldiscounts.com. But NYC is expensive no matter what.

The Ameritania is a decent place to stay. Nothing fancy at all, but it's clean and pretty quiet. I stayed there last summer, and got a rate of $125 a night through http://www.180096hotel.com/.

BTW, if you're a David Letterman fan (which I'm not), the Ameritania has been featured many times on the show when Dave would interview a couple of doormen there. The hotel is around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater where he tapes his show.

Try the Days Inn on 8th ave. Around the corner from the Best Western Presidents. It is also close to Stellas and The Gaiety. There is also a newly renovated on I think called the Portman Square Hotel about a block east of Broadway also close to the Gaiety. I forget the street.

If you want a gay place, the Incentra Guest House on Hudson St. or the Chelsea Pines on W.14th St. are reasonably priced (for New York)and very conveniently located for all the gay spots in the West Village and Chelsea. Many of the escorts who advertise in Unzipped, H/X, Next, etc., live in those neighborhoods as well.

I vote for Best Western President. I've stayed there often, and while the rooms are somewhat small, It is extremely modern, clean, comfortable, with marble baths and a good Mid-town location. I've stayed for $125 a night (excluding taxes). Rooms can be booked on-line, and prices on-line are frequently better than calling directly. Also, check the Sunday New York Times regularly for specials. Finally, I've stayed at other Best Westerns in NYC that are basically unrenovated SRO's with a Best Western name posted out front. Be sure to stay at the President, and not another Best Western advertised at a good rate. Enjoy NYC, and see you at the Gaiety.

I just found Radio City on 49th st between 6th and 7th for $125 on the internet. They have studio and one bedroom suites. Anyone ever try this place? It seems like it is newly renovated.
