Correct! When you give extra to a business owner it is not called a tip - it is called a bonus!

I have a restaurant owner in my neighborhood that opens by himself early morning and always stand ready to serve me breakfast. I insist on tipping...I mean...bonusing him! ?

I am afraid some rules of etiquette was set, and is stuck, in the era when ladies wore corsets. I mean, just read Jane Austen!! ?

is he only opening his restaurant doors in the morning, or is he ready for other openings ? in the early morning as well? ?

I would say this. If you are going to tip an escort or masseur AND you are certain you are going to see them again, tie the tip to something. In other words, if you always pay $200 and then one day you give him $300 but you say nothing about it, he will be expecting it next time. Ok, that sounds like his problem not yours, but what happens is that it creates confusion. The escort starts to second guess himself, what did I do wrong this time, he "only" gave me $200, but last time he gave me $300.

Do it it like this as you're pulling out the money, if you are inclined to add a $50 or a $20 or what have you,

1. Make it clear that you are adding additional bill or bunch of bills AFTER you pulled out the fee.

2. While handing him the TIP just say, "you said you need a new phone, so put this in the phone piggy bank" or narrow it down even more, "here, get out of the apartment and get something out to eat tonight/today"

Thank you, Rod, for a provider's perspective.

I have a guy I see every month for manicure, balls waxing, massage, and escort. As he's his own employer, I generally pay the advertised price and no tip. But each December, I give him a big tip and tell him it's for Christmas.

Well that sounds like a real 'package' deal and I wouldn't want him making any mistakes that could cost you irrepairable damage to the family jewels! Does your annual Christmas gift make up for 12 month's worth of tips? It sounds to me as if this guy is really good and aims to please you in every way! He must be satisfied since you are certainly a regular.

It is quite the package deal. He must be satisfied, it else he would raise his price.

I would say we are mutually satisfied

Not to sound like a dick but it’s a little odd when they expect a tip when theyre independent masseurs. They set their own prices.

They set their prices based on what the market supports. Have you considered that their value to me may exceed the value the market suggests? ?

I generally don't tip private masseurs, for the reasons stated above. The exceptions have been with one or two 100% legit masseurs along the way, whom I felt were underpriced for their skills, and for the times in my life where I have had a regular or semi-regular "go to" guy --- I am very generous around the holidays.
