What do you consider a fair tip?

When I was in college, after bad service, a buddy left a waitress a penny.

When she brazenly complained, he responded. "You want a better tip? Don't use your dildo in the bathtub!"

To this day, I can't decide if I should have laughed, or should have been mortified.

But in hindsight, for a server bold enough to complain about a gratuity, perhaps it was a fair tip.

It is completely inappropriate for anyone to complain to a customer or to their manager about a tip no matter how awful the tip is. I was recently in a nail salon (I'm a regular there) where one of the workers, in full view of everyone, after receiving a tip loudly announced that 15% is her required tip. I felt embarrassed to be there after that. Never happened before while I was there.
