Seeking to donate old porn

So I'm spring cleaning (yes, I know, in the Fall), and I have scores of old VHS porn tapes that I'd like to trash. But instead of setting them out on the stoop for the garbage collector, I'd prefer to give them to (a) charity or (b) a gay archive for this kind of material, if one even exists...

 

Any ideas? I'd happily box 'em up and ship them somewhere...I just don't know who accepts old porn...a charity would be nice; any gay charities re-sell this stuff?

The gay historical society in San Francisco used to accept old porn. You might want to check with them at http://www.glbthistory.org to see if they still do. Or with a gay archives nearer to you, if you're far from S.F.

If you can't find such a charity, worst case put a "for free" ad on Craigslist and you'll surely find someone willing to save them from the trash heap.

If you're interested in selling this yourself, there's a store in San Francisco that specializes in this sort of thing, The Magazine, on Larkin near Geary.

Sadly, these days it's difficult to even give away porn on VHS. Even charities want DVD. Guys who win porn in bar events say "no thanks" if it isn't in DVD format.

 

The market is switching as quickly as the LP market switched to CD.

 

I hate to say it but landfill might be the best destination.

 

You might find a taker on naughtybids.com but then again you might not.

If you can't find any takers, I'd box them up and send them to James Dobson - Focus on the Family, just to piss him off.

 

If truth be known, he might have some members who would really enjoy them.

You don't say what part of the country you're in but I donated a few old VHS porn tapes to the Vito Russo Library at the NYC Gay & Lesbian Community center.

 

They sold them as they don't loan out porn but they DO have an extensive collection of gay films on VHS and DVD that they do circulate. I know that they have some pretty obscure titles along with the more widely known stuff as I've given them quite a few (including some short films that have never been commercially released) myself.

 

Being a film buff I like to support their efforts to support gay themed films. Oh, they also have an EXTENSIVE collection of books on loan as well.

I don't know this for a fact, but I've heard that the "Out of the Closet" gay thrift stores in the LA area will accept such donations and then sell them.
