On a recent weekend in Montreal, I noticed that many men, not just young gay men, but men of all ages and I "think" preferences, were wearing a type of trouser that intrigued me. They are longer than the current baggy long shorts that are worn in the USA, and fall about six inches above the ankle. They are NOT baggy but fit well and appear neat. They seem to be an alternative to shorts, jeans or cargo pants.

Two questions: What are they called? (I know the tennis player, Rafael Nadal wears something like them.) and Two: Are these trousers worn any where in the USA and where can they be purchased?

Is this what you are referring too?

I have no idea what they are called. I'd call them shorts. I don't think they are hot by any means and would prefer guys not wear them. Although they kind of resemble knickers.

Greg

Yes---but the ones the guys in Montreal were wearing were not so tight abound the calf, and they were fuller in the thighs.. I agree with you that Rafael Nadal could wear almost anything(or even better NOTHING) and look good. But most of the men I saw wearing these things---and I've done some research on the 'net and they go by a variety of names---male capris, mancapris, "pedal pushers" etc.--didn't look ridiculous--but that's Montreal, and the Gay Village. How they would look on Main Street USA is another matter.

While researching the name I did find an article from Vancouver that talked about their introduction to that city by a silver-haired hunk---that was 2005. CNN did a story on them in a fashion piece in 1999 and predicted they would die a quick death a la male skirts :)) Apparently they are common in Europe. Any Europeans or European travelers have anything to add??

Pirate Pants

The New York Times and Miami Herald today referred to Nadal's pants-style as "Pirates' Pants." They presumably are made by Nike, since swoosh symbols are all over him, so some Nike fan or store should have an answer.

RE: Pirate Pants

Nike does sell pants/trousers a la Rafael Nadal---I checked out their web site and they come in three colours and with the Nike swoosh. Other places advertise a very limited number--none as appealing as the ones I saw almost everywhere in Montreal. So I guess the bottom line is to buy them in Montreal and/or Europe.
