So a friend of mine is visiting from out of town, he calls up wanting to know if I want to have a beer. I say no how about coffee? There once was a day where I loved to have a beer or a cocktail. But now, not so much. What the hell is wrong with me? LOL

Greg

You're a "tea toddler" Greg? Are you a child who likes tea? That's so cute. I think you meant "tee-totaler". :-)

Ahh but the classy lush in me has found a happy medium:

My "mama hooker" and best friend used to live half a block from my apartment. The he got "married" and moved to the far reaches of Los Angeles ... Culver City. OK so it's not that far but no way in hell I'm shlepping out there for coffee.

He doesn't mind coming to weho but he's a bit lushier than I could hope to achieve and ALWAYS wants to go for a drink. As a compromise I started bringing booze to Starbucks in a discreet flask or in the mini bottles. He's drunk because liquor enters the bloodstream faster when warm, I'm caffeinated, we're both happy.

It's quite delightful. I even think we've started a trend because everyone we've shown it to there seems to be doing it.

I've been thinking about this subject recently. In my younger days, when I wanted to get together informally with someone either personally or for business, we would meet in a bar or cocktail lounge. Now on such occasions, I seem to wind up at Starbucks. Near where I work in midtown Manhattan is one of their larger stores. It always seems to be packed with people having such get-togethers (and they almost always seem to have their laptop computers with them). I have to believe that if any business has been hurt by the success of Starbucks, it has to be the bars and cocktail lounges.

I would imagine Starbucks is a meeting place for mornings and afternoons. Bars on the other hand are for late afternoons and evenings.

It's hard to order a martini at 9 a.m. and who wants coffee at 5 p.m.

I would think the apres office crowd would not be likely to congregate at Starbucks

It is 1223 am as I write this in Seattle and I am sipping on an Americano. I think for me I have replaced the bar for the coffee shop. I've found over the years I do not enjoy drinking as much as I used too. Guess my tastes are changing? Also there are a number of coffee shops that are quite busy even at 9pm here in my neighbohood and yes they are ordering coffee and drinking it. Course this might be a Seattle thing. But when I was in Chicago back in Feb. I went to a coffee shop near boys town and even at 8pm or so it was pretty busy with people sitting around chatting drinking coffee.

No need to worry about cocktail lounges or bars. It is estimated that 10% of the population are alcoholics. They will continue to support those fine establishments long after the remaining 90% of the population find that getting drunk at all hours of the day or night interfers with their lives.

Just as a side note, while Government "Statistics" (insofar as anyone can trust the current Government's stats on ANYTHING) paint a pretty clear picture that caffeine use is far less detrimental than alcohol, those same stats confirm that marijuana use is less detrimental than caffeine..}(

... As I recall, Carl Sagan didn't drink much coffee. :+

You seem fine to me, very fine! I also don't care for drinking. Occasionally a very small drink if I'm really wound up. And then I usually feel like taking a nap. And once in a while I'll have some nice wine with a meal. But just one drink and I start to feel drunk. Which is okay if it's my birthday or something. I guess I just don't have enough bodyfat to drink much. And i've noticed it interferes with my erection in fact it has caused some embarassing moments. I'd rather have coffee and often do but man caffeine is so addictive, that I find I have to limit myself.

My favorite beverage is a large glass of water chugged (no ice please) maybe with a little juice. Sit for a moment and then I'm ready for anything. Yep water is MY party drug of choice, throw in a light meal and I'll be positively high.

I pride myself on being a bear. So do my clients. But I have always been three sheets to the wind after only two drinks or less. Well, at least noticeably tipsy. So, I'm not sure that this has anything to do with percentage of body fat.

One nice thing about our move 3.5 years ago was that it put us only 4.5 blocks from my favorite bar. I still only got to it three or four times a year. And its closed now. Ack. LOL.

When I was in college you would have been classified as a "cheap date"

Kind of a late bloomer but I am starting to actually enjoy a nice glass of water. A couple weeks ago thanks to Boobers I ended up getting a tummy bug and was rationed to a liquid diet and drank mostly water with a lemon wedge for a little flavor. It was actually gosh darn good! But nothing beats a nice cup of coffee :p
