Camp is in the eye of the beholder and, while I don't know that I see camp in Roth's concoction, it seems to be reckoning with the idea of camp more than many of the MetGala attempts. As a wise friend of mine insists, camp is found not made -- hence the many misfires of the MetGala. (For me, camp has to evince both humor and heart and, while I see the heart in Roth's ensemble, I don't see the humor.)

I’d bet the legions of drag queens who work their asses off at being camp would disagree.

Nonetheless, I agree that it’s incredibly difficult to be or create camp.

I thought it was a dumb and frankly near impossible concept to pull

off the minute they announced this years Met Gala theme. When 99%

of the guests at a “costume ball” miss the mark....it’s an unmitigated failure.

This may well go down in history as the year Ms. Wintour’s fabulous party....jumped the shark.

To be fair/er to Roth's ensemble, it is remarkable in action.

And for the creative context of its conception and design:

Thanks for the background on this. Interesting slide show in the NYTimes of all the glitz and glamour. I just thought folks were clueless as to Sontag's manifesto.
