> How is St Lucia?

Blu,

St. Lucia, the Netherlands Antilles and the Cayman Islands are listed amongst the most homophobic islands in the Caribbean. We personally experienced that in Grand Cayman.

According to Ed Salvato and Kenneth Kiesnoski the most gay-friendl-ish Caribbean islands are:

Probably best to skip PDA while in the Caribbean if you are looking for a hassle free vacation. I was solo on vacation in St. Lucia and I found the people to be pretty narrow minded about homosexuality.

The supplied list gave a passing grade to St. Maarten, A-, where a CBS or Logo employee was gay bashed not too long ago.

Might consider Costa Rica as a nice place for sun and fun and a bit more tolerance.

I was a travel agent at a (gay) travel agency for over 20 yrs. Don't go there if you're planning on PDA. At the least you risk being kicked out of your hotel, bein blackmailed by the police, etc.

The Domincan Republic has an established gay scene, but again, one is advised not to be "out" in public. The only scene is in the capital, Santo Domingo, which is not a beach resort.

I second the recommendation for Costa Rica! It is not Caribbean, but definitely tropical and gay-friendly. I visited there twice with my now ex-partner and found the people there open, friendly, and indifferent to sexual orientation. In fact, some of the gay nightlife in San Jose was just as nice as many major US cities I have visited! And Manuel Antonio (on the pacific) has a gay nude beach, la playita, that is quite fun. I used http://www.gay-costarica.com to make all my arrangements...Sergio was quite helpful from that agency.

I've had great times traveling solo in Costa Rica. In San Jose and Manuel Antonio Beach. A few fun, perhaps a bit third world gay bars in San Jose. I stayed at a gay guesthouse in San Jose and a beautiful gay hotel called Villa Roca in Manuel Antonio.

My favorite place is Playa del Carmen, Mexico. About 45 south of Cancun. That same AMAZING Caribbean water without the 'girls gone wild' atmosphere of Cancun. Unfortunately it is much more crowded than it used to be. Though it is a very sexy Rivera atmosphere, without the Rivera price...yet. For some reason I get laid there more than anywhere else I've been. Pay and non-pay.

To be clear you don't want to be making out on the streets in either of these places. Costa Ricans are a bit more formal and traditional than the rest of central America. Their literacy rate is higher than ours! Playa's Beaches and 5th Ave. are filled with Italians, Germans, Canadians, and many Mexican's vacationing from Mexico City. There is a very European feel. Their gay bar is cute. Met many men on 5th Ave. though.

RE: Gay-friendl-ish

I have no idea where the notion came that the Netherlands Antilles are homophobic. Saba is one of the gayest places I've ever been (Windwardside--not The Bottom). Curacao and Aruba are also rather gay friendly. The gayest place is probably St. Martin, especially the French side, which had about half a dozen gay bars (Marigot) when I was last there. Puerto Rico also has lots of gay locales (especially Condado in San Juan). There are some gay accommodations on the U.S.V.I.'s, especially St. Croix. There are also some gay places in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, if you like your vacation spot especially 3rd worldy. Essentially all of the former British possessions are homophobic to some extent or another. Playa del Carmen on the Mexican Caribbean coast has gay bars which are within easy walking distance to many of the town's hotels ($4 cab fare to Playacar if you want more luxurious facilities). In Cancun, it's a shlep from the hotel zone to the gay bars downtown.

Speaking of Costa Rica......

I met an escort in Hawaii who is actually from Costa Rica and works there as a freelance tour guide. Great guy and he loved to talk about his home country. When I saw Costa Rica mentioned in this thread I contacted him to get his thoughts. He replied "for sure we do have the most gay friendly and open minded places, maybe not

in San Jose but in the beaches around for sure. We do have Manuel Antonio that is a gay friendly beach with gay hotels and gay nude beach."

He passed along his website and stated he would be glad to help anyone planning to travel to there. Check out his website at:

Be sure to check him out in the 'about' section. He is a great guy and I am sure would make a great tour guide or travel companion.
