Spring is quickly creeping up on us and then summer and we all know what that means. Higher gas prices for all! I am so excited that maybe it'll take a full $3 to fill up my tank. I found a car and truck for those who might be interested in another alternative to the gas guzzeler in the garage. Check out the cars here http://www.zapworld.com/Default.aspx The cars are actually affordable and I just read that Chrystler is going to be importing similar cars here soon. Hope y'all enjoy.

Hugs,

Greg

I love ya, Greg, but you may just be getting ahead of yourself here a little bit. The only thing quickly creeping up on me is old age. Otherwise, things tend to creep along slowly. It is just January!:)

Greg...we have Smart cars here in Canada. They have been here a couple of years now. I wouldn't mind having one myself, or something similar. They show a Smart car on the ZAP link that you attached to your message. Those cars pass the crash test better than a Dodge Neon, so while they are small, they are build in a similar manner to a roll cage around the driver. I have seen them on busy highways, and then do fine. The Canadian model has a diesel engine.

The only downside, is that you have to work on the engine from the bottom of the car....so it has be up on a hoist, when servicing is being done.

A lot of sites show electric cars...and all I can say is that the elecrtical infastructure of US and Canada in its present condition would not be able to supply the power need to charge these cars if everyone were to go out an purchase one. I would think that if every new car that was built today was an electric car, there would be a very serious overload in the electrical supply and distribution system....so electrical while it looks great may not have much of a future..then the other problem is all the polution that might be created trying to generate enough power for several million electric cars.

SMART will finally hit the US market sometime in mid-2008. They've cleared the final hurdle and will release the 'ForTwo' model next year:

This whole project is Chrysler's baby, so i'm pretty sure that the vehicle will not only be extremely safe, but functional and gadgeted as well. Base price is under $15k.

I remember driving one of these in Italy. I thought the horsepower wouldn't allow for much fun on the highway, but i was wrong: It hauled ass, gripped the road and delivered outstanding gas mileage. I can see this car being the perfect solution for parking problem cities (SFO, Chicago, NYC) where space is at a major premium.

I'm not sure if America will accept the Smart car, but the one below on the left for sure. :o

And I've seen one of the smart cars over last summer during the weekends parked in my neighborhood. I laughed at first (before getting my scoot) at what a silly looking thing it was. But reading a little bit about it and how eco friendly it is I think it is a great alternative.

Although probably not as big of a saler as LeCar don't forget the Yugo :p But all seriousness I think this is a great idea. I am in the pain staking slow process of starting up my own business and want it to be as earth friendly as possible and would really consider one of these cars or trucks as a company vehicle for company use.

Drove one of the SMART cars in Germany once. Great in the city and some of the older towns where the streets are small. Then I got it on the autobahn; talk about the world passing you by...

I have seen LeCar, and the Smart car, and LeCar is or was much bigger.

Dimlyer Chrysler has made the car in Europe...and is sold by Mercedes Benz in Canada.. I think starting price is over 16,000 dollars and the one with all the options is around 21,000 to 22,000 dollars.

Well, you're too young to remember it but years before the Yugo was the Renault Alliance. I drove one in DC for several years. Every merge onto the freeway was a thrill ride.

The ramp I took onto the freeway was decidedly uphill, with a stop sign at the top. There was NO merge lane to enter traffic after the stop sign. All you could do was floor it. That poor Renault would just cough and sputter and people behind us could either get out of the lane or hit us as we came up to speed.

Not a fond memory. ;-)

Everyone needs the vehicle that meets the needs of their lifestyle and situation.

I can easily see myself in one of these little eco-friendly cars the next time I buy a car. But that's probably 10 years away and by then I suspect the field will have many more options. ;-)

I know - I see a lot of them around Vancouver...

I just can't help thinking they make you look like you're driving a sewing machine.

True one does look like they are driving a sewing machine...that being said, I am eagerly waiting for more cars like the Smart car to enter the market place. I would not be surprised if some Asian companies start building cars that are similar...and if that happens the prices should go down.

I think a compromise between a Smart Car and a gas guzzler is a Mini Cooper. I am totally satisfied with mine and it has enough sex appeal to be used as a pick-up magnet - or so I've been told.

I really love the Mini, and seriously considered it.

The funny thing is the gas mileage just isn't that great for such a small car. It's very similar in that regard to many mid-range sedans, and with the sedans you can at least fuck around in them. ;-)

Mini's are great cars.....and if you notice the wheel base, the wheels are set out as far as they can go on front and back. A lot of professional race car drivers use them for personal vehicles, because the handle so well.

Lots of get up and go and an all around fun car to drive....

but Deej... don't you want to have a bit of a challenge when you do it in a car? One may have to come up with new positions...:-)

Posted

30 years ago I did that in a Chevy Vega. :o

These days, coming up with new positions isn't a problem. Executing them, on the other hand.....

LOL
