I received it as well and I’m likewise curious about the source of the phone numbers.

Given the audience of people who’ve received it the likely answer is RENTMEN... but why would they sell contact information to a potential competitor?

Could it have been a hack of RENTMEN?

Notes on RENTMEN’s privacy policy:

This is the stuff that they disclose they capture but there is the potential for much more:

  • 2.1. Physical identity, names, passport details, address, phone number and personal identification numbers, date of birth, personal preferences, GPS position, IP addresses, information about device used.
  • 6.1. The Company may use automatic data collection technologies to collect certain information about your equipment, browsing actions, and patterns, including:
    • Details of your visits to the Website, including traffic data, location data, logs, and other communication data and the resources that you access and use on the Website.
    • Information about your computer and Internet connection, including your IP address, operating system, and browser type.
    • Information about your mobile device and Internet connection, including the device's unique device identifier, IP address, operating system, browser type, mobile network information, and the device's telephone number.

[*]6.2. The Company also may use these technologies to collect information about your online activities over time and across third-party websites or other online services (behavioral tracking).

[*]8.1. The company does not sell or rent your personal information to third-parties. We do not share your personal information, except as provided in this Privacy Policy.

8.2. The information in the Register can only be accessed the authorized Data Controller staff. Third parties do not have the right to access the Register unless required by the legal authorities

So, take the above as BEST case and prepare for the WORST case.

RM's privacy policy states:

"8.1. The company does not sell or rent your personal information to third-parties."

"8.2 Third parties do not have the right to access the Register unless required by the legal authorities (courts, prosecutors or investigative bodies). The law permits these authorities access to the personal data of the individuals."

If the information is coming from RM, some possibilities:

-RM sold your information, despite claims that it does not.

-RM lost control of your information, through hacking or mismanagement.

-RM gave your information to a legal authority, which may have lost control of it.

If the information is coming from RM, the second possibility seems most likely. You can always ask RM directly: "Why does a competing website suddenly have my phone number?"
