The local Assembly in Mexico City just adopted legislation to introduce same-sex civil unions, thus giving rights (including inheritance and such, but not adoption) to gay couples.

Of course, this is not (yet) marriage in the Dutch or Spanish sense, more something like the French establishment. Given the Federal system in Mexico, the scope of the new law is limited to Mexico City residents, but we must admit that it is a big step for the second largest Catholic country in the world.

Good for Mexico! :) :) When will we see this in the United States? ;(

A civil union law was adopted a few years ago in Argentina by the City of Buenos Aires. So far it hasn't had the effect of promoting similar legislation on the national level, but you have to start somewhere. People in Latin America are acutely aware of the passage of same-sex marriage in Spain and have generally looked to Spain as a role model of a country that came out of a long fascist dictatorship and modernized successfully. So we may see more progressive legislation in the next few years. Chile, I believe, is also considering marriage or civil unions for same-sex couples. That's remarkable, considering how socially conservative Chile is. Change comes slowly, but it does eventually happen!
