Ulysses And Olive Trees

The Odyssey relates that when Ulysses was young that his father gave him an orchard to tend. It had 13 pear trees, 10 apple trees, 40 fig trees, 50 rows of vines with corn between each row. I find it interesting that there were no olive trees.

 

The Odyssey does make reference to olive trees.

If it's an older translation, "corn" just means grain. Even now the British use the word that way sometimes.

Etymologically, that's where we get "corned" in "corned beef." Because there's little grain-sized bits -- including salt -- in the brine liquid.
