can anyone recommend accomodations in ft. laud/ would like to stay at a gay resort, clean but doesn't need to be fancy..good locaton but doesn't need to be on the beach. would like a place with a pool where one can socialize with the other guests, and a place that is cruisy would be a plus. would like to keep it under 75 per night. thanks in advance for any info

There was a place on Victoria St just west of Federal Highway #1 where it meets Sunrise that catered to gay men with a pool and clothing optional. Very private surroundings with a small pool which provided the focus to meet your neighbours and they permitted day visitors (when I lived there I would sometimes go there when the beach was too windy). Not near the beach but not too far from some clubs and dining. A car would be useful but not necessary if you are happy just to hang out and have the entertainment come to you. Sorry I can't remember the name but it's probably mentioned in Hotspots, the local gay rag.

The problem with FtL is that the hotels and beach are about 5 miles from all the gay bars, so if you want to go to the bars you either have to drink and then drive in an unfamiliar town, or rely on taxis. I prefer SoBeach, because it is all within walking distance.

It may be difficult to find a gay guest house with rates at $75 and below unless you're staying several days and get a multinight rate. Keep in mind the rates are lowest in summer and fall. If you just want an inexpensive hotel, try one of the Day's Inns (there's one on Broward Blvd just east of I-95, another on Oakland Park Blvd just west of I-95 and one on US 1 just north of Sunrise Blvd), or the Red Roof Inn on Powerline Rd. Of the three Day's Inns, I'd recommend the one on US 1; it's kept up a little better than the other two. The Red Roof Inn on Powerline has been recently updated and is ok for an inexpensive hotel......just ask for a room in the front, since the rooms in the back face the railroad tracks. As others have mentioned, you probably should get a car. The bars are not really within walking distance of each other or the hotels and guest houses.
