That never occured to you? To me, it did, but when we met again few months later I couldn't bother bothering him with questions about that.

I can't think of any reason why somebody would rationally pick "not telling anything" as more polite than "just tell him and quickly apologize" (am I being too optimistic here?). Hence, typing or calling in this situation must be making some people feel uneasy. The rest comes, as very usual in life, from a lack of actual consequences, for the client, for this or the other behaviour.

And still that wouldn't save you from it happening again, if one had the will; I guess you haven't implemented dramatic security measures since then.
