Many years ago I said something inappropriate on Twitter. I took the post down. An enemy of mine saved it and has been circulating it, and when my employer found out, I was fired. I was young and stupid and took it down years ago. Is my sacking justified? Well, I don’t know what you said so I don’t know how bad it was. But most employment is “at will,” which means companies can fire you and you can quit any time for any reason. The only thing an employer can’t do is fire you for any reason that is protected by law, such as age, race, gender and so on. That aside, I am deeply troubled by the gotcha, cancel culture. What if everything you have ever uttered privately had been recorded and played back? If anyone can say that there isn’t anything cringeworthy from their past, write to me. So I think generally we need to be more forgiving of youthful indiscretions that previously went unrecorded for posterity before social media. I am less forgiving if you post today. If you’re dumb enough to do that, I don’t have much sympathy for you if your employer takes action. 13-year-old California girl steals mom’s car, fatally strikes two men A 13-year-old California girl fatally struck two men after taking off with her mother’s car, authorities said. The girl from Vista was stopped Friday night, but sped away when an officer approached her car, Escondido police said. “What the officer didn’t know at the time, is that the car was being driven by a 13-year-old girl from Vista who took her mom’s car without her knowing,” Lt. Kevin Toth told Fox5 San Diego. The teen then lost control and crashed into the bushes, where two men were sleeping, authorities said. Police said they believe both of the men were homeless. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other died at a hospital, cops said. The girl and a friend, who had been a passenger, were arrested and later released to their parents, police said. It’s unclear whether they will face any charges.

Florida man steals ring from one girlfriend, uses it to propose to another He’s accused of cheating on two girlfriends and stealing from both. Now he’s single and running from cops. A Florida man went into hiding this week after two women he had dated for years found out about each other on social media and learned both had been lied to and robbed, authorities said Thursday. The accused con artist, 48-year-old Joseph Davis, met the victims on the dating app OKCupid in 2015 and 2016 and gave each of them a different fake name, “Joe Brown” and “Marcus Brown,” according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. One of the victims told detectives last month that she discovered through Facebook that her boyfriend of several years was actually engaged to another woman. The Orange City victim said she looked up the fiancée’s Facebook page and noticed a photo of her wearing a wedding band and engagement ring that was identical to one she had from a prior marriage, authorities said. The woman said she went to check her jewelry box and saw that her rings and several other items were missing, confirming that her boyfriend had stolen from her and used her own jewelry to propose to another woman, according to a news release. The stolen items, which also included a diamond ring that belonged to her grandmother, were worth nearly $6,300. The victim confronted and dumped Davis before reaching out to the other victim, who was cooperative and even returned some of the stolen jewelry. “With both relationships over due to the infidelity, the victims began cooperating with each other and with detectives,” authorities said. The second victim, who lives in Orlando, told the Orange City woman that “Brown” had fooled her too. The convicted felon allegedly brought her to his girlfriend’s house one day, falsely claimed the house was his and asked her to move in. The Orlando woman agreed and packed up her apartment, disassembled her furniture and was ready to go before Davis suddenly told her that the “deal fell through,” according to the release. After Davis moved out and “disappeared,” the woman noticed that her laptop and some of her own jewelry were missing from her apartment, authorities said. Both women contacted the sheriff’s office and helped them track down the man’s true identity. It turns out that Davis has felony convictions in Oregon and North Carolina and an active arrest warrant out of Oregon for a hit-and-run crash with injuries. His criminal record includes arrests for possession of a fictitious ID, filing a false police report, domestic assault and possession of cocaine with intent to sell. Authorities urged the public to be on the lookout for the suspect and report any sightings of him. They noted that Davis has a tattoo of a cross on his left arm with the words, “Only God can judge me.”

Doberman pinscher goes in for dental work, comes out neutered A blue Doberman pinscher brought to a North Carolina animal hospital to have his teeth cleaned came out neutered. His owners planned to breed him. “He is our first family pet. We love him to death. He’s a good-looking dog,” Haley Plymale told WRAL of her 2-year-old dog Hannibal. “I wanted a little piece of him to keep in the family forever.” According to the report, Plymale drove Hannibal to his appointment at Creekside Animal Hospital in Roanoke Rapids Tuesday and handed him over to a staffer. COVID-19 restrictions prohibit pet owners from going inside. Plymale said she got a call 90 minutes later from an upset veterinarian who told her there’d been a mistake by a vet tech and Hannibal was castrated. Plymale thinks he may have been confused with another Doberman. “(The vet) said this had never happened to her before,” Plymale said. “She sounded like she was in tears.” Plymale reportedly wants to be compensated for the apparent error and says she’s spoken to a lawyer. Creekdale Animal Hospital’s operator Dr. Cynthia Elias posted a note on Facebook. “As animal lovers and veterinarians we care deeply for our patients, and strive to treat every one as if they were family. We understand the concerns surrounding a recent incident in which a dog was mistakenly neutered at our clinic, and it is with a heavy heart that we write this message,” the posting said. “We realize an incident like this is not okay, and want you to know we have already implemented additional preventative measures to make sure it can’t happen again.” She also wrote that the Creekside Animal Hospital would work with Plymale to find a solution. Dr. Elias has not responded to requests for comment from the Daily News.

“Jeopardy!” is suffering another tragic loss after the death of beloved host Alex Trebek. Brayden Smith, a champion competitor during Trebek’s final episodes he filmed before losing his battle with pancreatic cancer, died at age 24. He died unexpectedly last Friday in his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. “The ‘Jeopardy!’ family is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brayden Smith,” the show said in a statement. “He was kind, funny and absolutely brilliant. Our deepest condolences go out to Brayden’s family. He will be missed.” “We are heartbroken to share that our dear Brayden Smith recently passed away unexpectedly,” Smith’s mother Debbie wrote on Twitter. “We are so grateful that Brayden was able to live out his dream on @jeopardy.” The cause of death is unknown, TMZ reported. Smith won five games in a row and more than $115,000 during his week on the show, which was filmed in October. According to his obituary, Smith “attained a lifelong dream” when he competed on “Jeopardy!” and was hailed on social media as “Alex’s Last Great Champion.” Trebek had nicknamed him “Billy Buzzsaw” during his run and said: “Most impressive, I don’t know what to say,” during his gameplay.[/url] “He was looking forward to competing in the show’s Tournament of Champions,” for which he had been qualified, according to his obit from the Dignity Memorial funeral home. “[Trebek] did, I believe, really like Brayden,” executive producer Mike Richards told EW. “I could tell that he very much enjoyed that young man, and that was fun to watch. I think that energized him.” “The best part of it for me was spending time with [Trebek],” after his winning streak. “Doing the questions and answers is almost incidental, I think, to spending time with somebody who I had cherished in my life for such a long period of time… I think back on it all the time and really savor each moment that I got to have with him.” “Every moment since I last was on the studio lot has been a moment that I’ve been wanting to get back on there,” he said. Smith graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in economics in 2020 and was hoping to attend law school to become an attorney for the federal government. Recently he had served as an intern for the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. helping to research criminal justice reform cases. Before college, Smith attended Liberty High School in Henderson, Nev. where he was a National Merit Scholar semifinalist. His love for “Jeopardy!” was fostered as a young adult when he captained his school’s Quiz Bowl team to back-to-back state runner-up finishes. The “Jeopardy!” champ was not only booksmart, but was in love with culture, too. His family noted that he was an avid sports fan, loved all genres of music and was in love with film, flipping between Oscar winners and slapstick comedies with ease. Smith is survived by his parents Scott and Deborah (Rudy) Smith, and three brothers: Bryce, 26, of Reno, Nev., Brock, 18, and Brody, 15, both of Las Vegas.
