What Are You Reading During Your Staying-at-Home?????
handiacefailure replied to + Axiom2001's topic in Literature
Been doing mainly jigsaw puzzles to pass the time but have read some stuff that I would have read anyway since my favorite authors have published books since this started. Favorite is Boy in the Woods by Harlan Coben. Also read: If it bleeds by Stephen King Camino Wings by John Grisham Cilka's Journey by Heather Morris Legacy of Lies by Robert Bailey -
Some Las Vegas casinos to re-open on June 4th.
handiacefailure replied to EZEtoGRU's topic in The Lounge
Most casinos are extending status by a year. They are also extending status for at least a few months. If your points are with Caesars's just get their credit card or look at their dining program, that's how I keep my points active when I can't gamble. I go a couple times a year and Vegas was the last time I flew back in early March. I had a conference in late April and that got pushed back to June and then to August. I'm hoping it cancels or gets moved back to the late fall, Vegas is too hot in August and if none of the shows are open there won't be much to do. -

Wonder how people on the casino floor are handling drinking and smoking if they have to wear a mask. -
When I was in college in the 80's, I remember my friends my age used to call the Gold Coast the Troll Coast:) The detroit bar I really miss is the Gas Station even though it didn't have strippers and was in a very shitty area. In Michigan they aren't allowed to take everything off though are they? That's the one advantage Windsor has. I liked the upper level of the Happy Tap, and there used to be some younger guys that would go there from Michigan since the drinking age is only 19 in Canada.
-
I loved Happy Tap. I'm not even sure if there are any straight strip clubs anymore in Windsor, I know Danny's closed a while back. On thing they would screw you over on was lap dances. A good friend of mine went there and told him it was something like $10 or $15 for a lap dance and didn't tell him it was per song until after the dance and he ended up paying the guy for whatever what one dance would cost and gave him like a $20 and refused to pay anymore and the dancer and manager went after him and he just walked out and refused to go back but I know Remington's in Toronto did that to me but fortunately it was only three songs. Wasn't happy when I found out after. I don't think Michigan allows dancers to take everything off.

I noticed red peppers have skyrocketed. I made roasted red pepper soup in my vitamix a lot and two months ago they were 75 cents each and then jumped up to a $1 and then $1.25 and Saturday they were up to $2. $2 is too expensive

People really are idiots. I needed a lemon last night and there's a small mexican grocery store a few blocks from my condo I like to walk to if I just need one or two things and like that they require masks. They have signs in both English and Spanish that state a mask is required to enter the store. A couple are arguing with the manager when I went up to pay for the lemon. They were told they had to wear masks and were telling the manager that the sign said all customers were required to wear a mask to enter the store and they put there's on when the cashier told them but it didn't say anything about required to keep them on. I don't understand why we are giving an extra $600 a week now for unemployment or giving everyone on SNAP and food stamps the max right now. How are people laid off now suffering more than if they were laid off a year ago, especially the ones on a temporary layoff due to COVID that will have a job to come back to? We're having trouble getting some of our lower paid employees to come back now because they are making more on unemployment. A couple have said they don't want to risk getting covid, yet one of them was on facebook whining about the casino being closed and another lady had photos of her and friends on facebook at a bar the first night they were able to reopen. I don't think these people realize that once the dole runs out how hard it will be to find another job.

If an escort ad says they want a deposit then I skip over the ad and if I contact an escort and they say they require a deposit I don't repsond
-
I think escort demand will be down for quite a while even if we do manage to get covid under control. I've been lucky enough so far to keep my job and income but won't want to hire for a while for safety reasons. I also usually hire when I travel since I can't find reliable escorts in the NW Ohio/SE Michigan area and I haven't been on a plane since early march and won't be travelling in the foreseeable future so if it's an escort in a big city who meets a lot of travellers their business there will be down as well. Not sure if Escorts set their prices on a supply/demand like a lot of companies do or not.

Depends on the state. In Ohio they can open Tuesday. I'm a Y member and they are only opening up three branches on Tuesday and the rest open June 8. I know they aren't doing personal training because of social distancing concerns at the Y, not sure if other gyms are

Ben Platt Live From Radio City Music Hall : NETFLIX

thanks for the heads up. Saw Evan Hanson twice and his concert in Detroit last year -
This is the first time I've stayed home on Memorial day since at least 2000 (with the exception of 2012 when I broke my femur) and have been to IML every one of those years except last year. Going to be strange not doing anything and not like I need the time to catch up on stuff since I've been home for the past two and a half months. Something to keep in mind if you are travelling is a lot of attractions like museums will be closed as well as a lot of bars and restaurants in a lot of places. Also some hotels are closed. The Chicago Hilton and another large hotel we use for business travel are closed now due to no business. I also wouldn't want to be on a subway or bus or uber right now if you are flying to whereever you are going.
-
I've noticed the same thing, and also notice the more upscale the grocery store the better people are at staying six feet apart and honoring the one way aisles as well. I'm not sure if it's the demographics that shop there or if it's because the more upscale stores have a lot fewer shoppers.

Food supply chain challenges during Covid-19
handiacefailure replied to + glutes's topic in The Lounge
A place here charged me a surcharge and I was pretty pissed off because they didn't disclose it. I used a local through last week and ordered off the menu at the drive through and the amount was more than listed on the menu and I was told due to the Covid crisis they were tacking on a 10 or 15 percent surcharge and it was being split among the staff for having to work through this. No problem with them doing it and think it's a nice gesture but they should either change the menu board prices or have a sign up stating there is a surcharge. -
Living alone and wanting a dog during COVID
handiacefailure replied to jonnychgo's topic in The Lounge
A pet is a big financial responsibility and a lot of people who buy pets don't take that into account. A serious pet illness can easily costs a lot more than a human pet visit. I think it's a YMMV situation by state for places like petco and vets to be able to do grooming. I am pretty sure here they aren't allowed to, kind of like if there is a spa or gym in a hotel. I'm sure a lot of dog groomers are working out of their homes though, I know a couple people who cut hair and they still doing it on the down-low out of their houses (I haven't had mine cut but a friend of mine did and said the lady is calling herself a kitchen beautician) but it's a lot safe having a dog groomed than having your haircut. -

I'd adopt a dog if you have always wanted one and can take care of him. Now might be a good time to get one if you are working from home during this so you'll be home to bond with him and have time to properly housebreak and train him. Not sure if the shelters are open now or not and if foster's would want someone in their home. In some big cities people are adopting or fostering pets from people who have or died from Corona. Something to keep in mind though is taking the dog to the vet and if it requires grooming. With restrictions being eased it might not be that big of a problem soon but my sister hasn't been able to have her dog groomed since March because groomers were ordered closed. My cat's are due in this month for their annual vaccines and exam and my vet postponed their visit until July. And for the patients he is seeing you have to drive up in your car and an assistant comes and gets the pets and you have to wait in your car and they bring the pet back out. I'm sure a vet will see a new pet for vaccines and an exam and if you have to neuter him. My cats get timid if I'm not with them so I want to make sure I can be in the exam room with them. I wouldn't let a fear of getting the virus stop you from getting a dog as long as you'll be home during this and not have to rely on a dog walker or pet sitter. I have the fear of what will happen to my cats if I die and am hoping my sister will take them. They are purebred Burmese cats that are very loving so I'm sure a burmese cat rescue would find them a good home easily. I just want to make sure they get adopted out together. You can get sick or injured anytime. I broke my femur and was in the hospital for almost a month between the surgery and the rehab place. I use a cat sitter when I travel and when I was in the ER and heard what I had to go through, I immediately called the cat sitter and was fortunate enough she was available the entire time I was laid up. She came every other day and the other days I had my parents or sister or a friend go and grab my mail and they would feed them and change the water. Have you thought about getting a cat? You don't have to walk them and if you travel or get sick someone just needs to come in once a day to feed them and change the water and clean the litter box and you don't have to housebreak a cat. Some cats can be very loyal and like a dog. I have two burmese cats and they are like a dog personality wise with the care of a cat. They'll sit on my lap all the time and sleep with me. The breeder I got my oldest one from calls them velcro cats because they stick to their owners like velcro LOL -
Good luck with it and hope you have yeast because that is something being hoarded right now. I received one as a secret santa gift a few years ago and used it a couple times and it has sat on my counter since. The girl that manages my church's thrift shop said bread makers are something that gets donated a lot. It was easy enough to use, I just hate slicing the bread and the shelf life isn't that good. Sour dough is my favorite and I'm too lazy to make a starter so just buy my bread at the farmers market every week. To be honest, when I buy or get a small kitchen appliance it usually gets used a couple times and the novelty wears out and it sits in the kitchen or my storage locker. The only small kitchen appliances I've gotten my money's worth from is my egg boiler, my vitamix and my cuisanart countertop conviction/toaster oven. I love my kitchenaid mixer but sure haven't used it that much for what I paid for it.

There is a branch of a large bank on the first floor of my office building that is open. But my office is downtown and this bank doesn't have a drive thru so I think that's why they are still open. The other banks downtown have closed their lobby's but have drive thru's downtown. It's a pain because they have one teller working and they only allow one customer in at a time and you have to place your deposit or withdrawl slip in a basket and step back and another employee takes it to the teller to process and brings the cash or receipt back. It was a pain last friday on the first because they had a long line and no one was social distancing outside the door and I was forced to use a side door to enter our building since I'm trying to stay six feet away from anyone.

All employees in Ohio are required to wear masks. But I was talking about customers as well since they are the ones you have the closest contact with at most times. I have been pretty happy with how Ohio's governor has been handling this (with the exception of releasing a particular prisoner early that had seven years left on his sentence all every parol board member voted against it) but am pissed off he changed his original ruling on all people in retail stores being required to wear masks. The masks protect people from spreading it and I've noticed the people that are violators of the six feet rule and going the wrong way down aisles almost neve have masks on. And even if the state doesn't require masks the store can still require it. Costco requires everyone in all their stores to wear a mask and the local grocery store I like to go to requires masks.
