I saw him about three years ago before he sort of disappeared for a while and then resurfaced with a very different kind of operating mode. I had a very good experience with him and he was unbelievably polite and engaging. But he was expensive then even for all the good he delivered. That doesn’t seem to have changed. I agree with NYCman when he talks about YMMV as a means of signaling that one’s encounter (as a total experience) probably was not typical for lots of different reasons. I usually have a “sense” about “what’s done unto you may not be what is done unto others” and that is either on my end or the masseurs. Sometimes it’s an off day for me just like it can be an off day for them, or an “on” day for me and same for the masseur. However I don’t use YMMV when the masseur was clearly not like the pictures or did not performed the massage as advertised... those elements that are in the ad and fair game for comment. I actually wish more would comment on the masseur’s actual skill level because that is primarily why I go. I’m interested in “worth what paid for.” We all know people and places where we can get what we want for a whole lot less than what some private masseurs charge. So was the masseur and massage as advertised (granted that measure is subjective)? For me, that would not be YMMV.

Completely agree with so many comments on this thread. I’ve had more than one “newbie” request (not recently) for “too much info too fast.” Pay attention to intuition.

This is a great thread! Thanks to all who weigh in. As for me, the answer is yes, it can be addicting and get out of control emotionally and financially. But I will say this: in my nearly ten years of getting massages I have met some of nicest most interesting guys and I would not trade it for anything. I’m friends with some now and see others occasionally. Yes there are bad, if not hilariously awful experiences, but those are few and far between. If one is careful and learns how to read ads so as to choose the good ones and avoid the bad, it can be a rewarding (sometimes expensive) way to interact with people and have genuinely good experiences. Regardless of motives on either side, we are all still people looking for connection. If we treat others respectfully then the chances of the encounter being mutually rewarding are much higher. I’ve experienced this several times. Massage can turn into a genuine connection. What I’ve also found is that I like giving massages as much as receiving them now. A good masseur can teach you a lot about how to receive the massage as well as how to give a good one. I have had more than one masseur tell me they are going to give me the massage they would like to have. I think at the end of the day it all depends on what you are in it for and what you want to get out of it short term and long term. I see massage as a language of touch, a way to converse. Receiving touch is like listening to someone. Some masseurs have a lot to say I want to hear, others not so much! Enjoy it!

Great topic and important for both client and masseur. I would never repeat never show up to receive a massage without being sure I was as clean all over as possible. I always respect masseurs who are both very clean and fresh and who ask the same of clients. My trust level goes way up when things are clean and that includes the apartment or massage space, the table and sheets, and clothing. Recently I had a horrendous experience with a masseur who smelled like he hadn’t had a bath in weeks and I couldn’t get through the experience. Had to leave. And while we are on the topic, maybe I’m by myself in this, but music choices are very important to me. I can’t enjoy the massage if I’m forced to listen to soundtracks from war movies (which has happened), Lawrence Welk polka music (which has happened), and bombastic classical symphonic music (which has happened). As a classically musician, I get so wrapped up in the music that I can’t enjoy the massage. I do ask if we can change the music, but then often it makes so little difference to the masseur that they don’t have any other ready choices.
