One man’s Rec Room, is another man’s prison.

Must have been 30 years ago, I was sitting on a plane chatting with the guy next to me, who after a few pops became very chatty. He claimed to be a tax attorney. He said never, ever, hide, understate, or otherwise lie about your income, ever. He said that’s how Capone landed in jail. Deductions, he said, are another story, as they’re open to interpretation. (I’m a non-attorney poster, and in no way is this a legal opinion, explicit, nor implied.)

What Was Your Family's Policy on Alcohol Consumption When You Were a Child?
+ bashful replied to rvwnsd's topic in The Lounge
Unfortunately, some have no control over their alcohol consumption, and families bear the brunt. -

At what age did you start wishing you were or looked younger?
+ bashful replied to caramelsub's topic in The Lounge
Haven't reached it yet. My father, whom I've always looked like, always looked younger than his age, until his 80's, then he looked his age, or maybe because I saw him less often, the change was more dramatic. Now my body, that's another story. -
How did your family handle nudity when you were a child?
+ bashful replied to + 7829V's topic in The Lounge
I had three brothers, and no sisters. Never saw my mom naked, but did see her in her bra and slip a couple of times. As far as the rest of us, we had a one bathroom house, and shared bedrooms, so would occasionally see my dad or brothers naked, No big deal. Just part of living together in small quarters. Also, my parents were from Europe where taking saunas was common, and during summer vacations, when we were kids, that was the only place to bathe, so the guys took a sauna together, where we were naked. Again, no big deal. When I visited family in Europe, I was invited to take a sauna with the uncles, and the boyfriend of one of the uncle's daughters. Of course, we were all naked. It was a great bonding experience with family I had never met until that trip. After I did the obligatory jump in the lake after sweating my ass off, I was honored to be invited to sit on the liar's bench and have a beer, still naked. -
I remember when I heard of Kennedy’s death. I was six. The across the street neighbor would pick her daughter and me up from school. I remember getting in the car and she seemed different. She had the radio on, and normally she didn’t. I don’t know if, or who asked, but she either said Kennedy, or the president died. I don’t remember even knowing what a president was. When I got home, my mom was in her usual hectic pace of trying to get dinner ready for the family. Don’t remember anything else said about it that day. I remember watching the news coverage of the ‘67 Detroit riots. I remember landing on the moon. We had recently got a color TV, and all of us had our eyes clued to the screen. Probably the last time our entire family watched the same thing at the same time.

I actually never had a TV with a remote control until 2000.

A job I had in the operations room for several years usually was non-stop talking on the phone, or shouting across the aisles to get answers, or answer questions, put out fires, etc.. Every day when I drove home, it was in silence, no radio, and then, when I got home, at least another hour on the couch with a drink in silence. Then I could enjoy the evening.

Suggestions for Nice and Sturdy Lift Top (Coffee) Tables
+ bashful replied to + MysticMenace's topic in The Lounge
Doubtful chains will have a great selection. Google “height adjustable coffee table”, several come up. This is one: https://upscaleconsignment.com/stickley-adjustable-height-coffee-dinette-game-work-table-3950-88359.html Edit. Sorry, I didn’t notice you already ordered. -
Had it since 2007. It's great on a long trip. No more finding a new station after leaving a broadcast area for a station you finally like. Good variety with Select Plan, without paying a lot (about $75 a year). Plus, my last car had Bose, the one prior had Harmen Kardon (I loved, loved, loved the sound quality), and Bose before that car. Today, I have the standard radio, and definitely notice better sound quality when listening to Sirius on this car rather that standard FM. I don't drive much anymore, so I suppose if my next car has HD FM (I hear the clarity is great compared to non-HD), I may consider getting rid of Sirius.

A summer job at a plastics factory that made auto parts. I had to climb up and down four or five steps on each machine carrying up about 20 pounds of pellets to fill the hopper that dropped into the injection machine, were heated, and out came the part where someone else trimmed it. It was hot, dirty, smelly, and paid lousy. About two weeks later, got a call from another parts factory that pressed rubber onto rings for seals. Also hot, dirty, smelly, but was union so pay was great. They hired me back each summer. It paid for my entire college education. Also saw one of the biggest dicks. He worked in another area on my same shift and showered at the end of the shift, and never wrapped a towel around himself when he came out of the shower. He would take his time drying off his junk, sometimes putting one foot up on the bench. He had low hangers. Only a few guys worked that shift, so it was usually just us. He seemed to enjoy showing off, and always initiated conversation while I was watching, but he never invited more, and I was to afraid to also.

About to make an emotional purchase. Midlife crisis?
+ bashful replied to + Reisr30's topic in The Lounge
My four prior cars, I paid cash, but when I bought my current car, my credit union had very low interest rate car loans, so I financed as to not take the money out of savings. Lately, I find myself looking each month at how much I still owe. Cash from now on. -
I've always called before the expiration date to cancel, so they won't slam me with full price renewal. They always come up with something. Just got to go into the conversation with the mindset of your purpose is to cancel.

It was the go-to store for our family. It was nearby at Grand River and Greenfield. I thought the store was huge. Basement, 1st floor, Mezzanine, 3rd floor, and annex. Except for groceries, and lumber, could buy just about everything there, including grave headstones. Every year before school started, Mom would take me there, a new pair of shoes, a shirt, maybe two, and pair of slacks, maybe two, and the rest of my school clothes were my older brother's hand me downs Mom would alter to fit on her sewing machine. Thanks for the memory.
