He moved to New York in 1973, became a key figure in the East Village punk art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, and continued to picture the human body as his primary subject. Jimmy DeSana died in 1990 from AIDS-related illness. From The New York Times, July 31, 1990: Jimmy DeSana Dead; Photographer Was 40 Jimmy DeSana, a photographer known for his witty and occasionally gently erotic color images, died on Friday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. He was 40 years old. The cause of death was not disclosed. Mr. DeSana was born in Detroit on Nov. 12, 1949, and moved to New York City in 1973. He had his first exhibition in 1979 at the Stefanotti gallery on West 57th Street. With such artists as Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Laurie Simmons and James Casebere he helped to make photography an important part of the art scene of the early 1980's. Mr. DeSana specialized in tableaux or photography set up to offer a distinctly artificial alternative to the real world. His images had a Surrealist flair. In recent years, he experimented with images made completely in a darkroom, suspending small motifs or mundane materials (including popcorn in one work) against fields of luminous color. His most recent exhibition was at the Pat Hearn gallery in SoHo in 1988. He is survived by his parents, James and Josephine DeSana, of Atlanta. (He was the night manager.) Seven years ago, from June 12 to 27, 2010 (a few months after Melleno's death), they were shown publicly for the first time at drkrm/gallery in Los Angeles. The images offer a unique glimpse into pre-AIDS gay sexual culture. This is from the gallery's promotion for the show: Situated in a refurbished Victorian [at the corner of Oak and Steiner, in the Lower Haight], The Fairoaks [owned by a group of gay friends] was known for its laid-back and racially integrated ambiance. Bold and unapologetic, Frank Melleno’s images capture an aspect of gay life rarely seen in snapshot photography: sexually candid encounters that are playful, spontaneous and often affectionate. The dark storm of drug abuse and pandemic disease that would soon overtake the community is not visible in these celebratory pictures. Melleno’s collection of Polaroids was put in a box shortly after they were shot and not been seen until now. Many of the images contain nudity and frank erotic scenes, but they also capture men dressed in festive attire and engaged in other aspects of the counter-culture lifestyle the Fairoaks promoted. Many artists lived at the hotel, and ongoing therapy-support groups and monthly theme parties enhanced the Fairoaks’ reputation as a neighborhood center for gay men as much as a bathhouse. 19 - Robert Mapplethorpe, 1972 Polaroid self-portrait During his 20s, between 1970 and 1975, Mapplethorpe made more than 1,500 photographs with Polaroid cameras. Within his first year of taking pictures, he began to explore his sexual attraction to men. He made dozens of images of young men gazing at the camera with sultry come-hither looks, or staring past him in states of suspended consciousness. For his subjects, being photographed by Mapplethorpe was often an erotic experience. For him, taking pictures was a means of seduction and a catalyst for sex, the Polaroid process being particularly appealing for its immediacy.
