Didn't you live in southern California and then retire to Florida? Have you ever shoveled snow? (Don't be offended by the blatant envy in that question.)

Here on the East Coast, we are anticipating a "bomb cyclone." It's currently brewing in the Atlantic. It will feature hurricane-force winds and polar vortex temperatures. Until yesterday, I'd never heard the term. There are decades-old black-and-white pictures of my sister and me, bundled up to near suffocation, standing atop many feet of snow -- proof positive that we did have major snowstorms back in the day. If it was a particularly big storm, we called it a blizzard. (Technically, that's a winter storm with high winds over a sustained period of time, but plenty of people used the word to mean a whole lot of snow.) It was never called a "snowmageddon" -- I know this because I just looked it up and learned that that term was coined in 2007 as an ironic comment on an overhyped winter storm that turned out to be ... not much. But then weather forecasters started using "snowmageddon" in their reporting -- with no irony intended. And now comes a "bomb cyclone."

That Savannah. She can make your head spin. Yesterday it was, "... I am so thrilled ... " (about her new co-host) and yet, just a month ago, she was near tears at the loss of the old one: "... We are devastated ... We are heartbroken. I’m heartbroken for Matt – he is my dear, dear friend and my partner, and he has been loved by many, many people here ... " I wonder if Matt Lauer was watching yesterday (sitting at home, twiddling his thumbs, nothing much to do) marveling at Savannah's swift recovery from heartbreak and despair. Perhaps he was even a little cheered by the news that, come to find out, Firing Him isn't the most popular decision NBC News ever made. (Shhh ... don't tell the women he harassed.)

Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), Soviet pilot and cosmonaut, he was the first human to fly in outer space (April 12, 1961, when his spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth in 108 minutes). Short (only 5-foot-2), Gagarin earned a reputation as an adept public personality. An instant celebrity after his space flight, he was described as having a smile "that lit up the Cold War." He died at 34 in the crash of a routine training flight. His ashes are interred in the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square.

From The Chicago Tribune, December 30: Man's Country, Chicago's oldest gay bathhouse, closing after 44 years Man’s Country, the gay bathhouse in Uptown, is closing, capping 44 years of business with a 13-hour party that will begin New Year’s Eve and extend into the morning after. This private club has been open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas Eve, according to owner Ron Ehemann. It has served as a backdrop to some of the enormous achievements and challenges faced by Chicago’s LGBTQ community over the decades. The property on which Man’s Country sits at 5015 N. Clark St. is being sold. Ehemann said much of the complex will be demolished to make way for condominiums in a new building to be called The Renslow, a reference to Chuck Renslow, the LGBTQ businessman and gay rights pioneer who started the bathhouse in a former fraternal lodge. (Ehemann said one part of the complex will remain: Full Kit Gear at 5021 N. Clark St.) To Owen Keehnen, a Chicago author and historian, the loss of Man’s Country is “a gay version of seeing the house you grew up in torn down. It was everything.
