  9. The Leyendecker brothers , born in Germany, seen here at ages 20 and 22 in Paris, 1896 ... J.C. Leyendecker (March 23, 1874 – July 25, 1951) was the preeminent American illustrator of the early 20th century best known for his poster, book and advertising illustrations, the trade character known as The Arrow Collar Man, and his numerous covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Between 1896 and 1950, Leyendecker painted more than 400 magazine covers. For The Saturday Evening Post alone, he produced 322 covers in addition to many advertisement illustrations for its interior pages. No other artist, until the arrival of Norman Rockwell two decades later, was so solidly identified with one publication. Leyendecker has been credited with "virtually inventing the whole idea of modern magazine design." Biographers have speculated about Leyendecker's sexuality, often attributing the homoerotic aesthetic of his work to a homosexual identity. He excelled at depicting male homosocial spaces (locker rooms, clubhouses, tailoring shops) and extraordinarily handsome young men in suggestive poses or exchanging glances. Never married, he lived with another man, Charles Beach, for much of his adult life. Beach, the original model for the famous Arrow Collar Man, is assumed to have been his lover. Frank Xavier Leyendecker (January 19, 1876 – April 18, 1924), was an American illustrator known for his stained glass work as well as his illustrations for posters magazines and advertisements. He worked with his brother in their studio, first in Chicago, then later in New York City and New Rochelle, NY. Leyendecker was suffering from depression and poor health due to drug addiction when he most likely committed suicide by morphine overdose at age 48. Charles Beach, painted by J.C. 10. Arthur Rothstein http://kevinrayarcher.com/WordPress/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Arthur-Rothstein.jpg Rothstein during his time as a Farm Security Administration photographer. Working in support of FDR’s New Deal agenda, the photographers of the FSA (including Rothstein, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans) sought to improve conditions for poor farmers and sharecroppers further impoverished by the Great Depression. Their cameras served as tools to “visualize social facts, to show the truth of what was happening,” unobscured by politics or fantasy. Arthur Rothstein (1915-1985) is recognized as one of America’s premier photojournalists. During a five decade career, his photographs ranged from a hometown baseball game to the drama of war, from struggling rural farmers to U.S. Presidents. During the Great Depression, Rothstein was invited to join the federally sponsored Farm Security Administration (FSA) established by President Roosevelt in 1935. He later served as the director of photography for Look magazine until it stopped printing in 1971, and then for Parade magazine until his death. Recipient of more than 35 awards in photojournalism and a former juror for the Pulitzer Prize, Rothstein was also a founder and officer of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. 12. Bedrich Grunzweig http://pavleye.com/images/439/1600_439.jpg Bedrich Grunzweig (1910-2009) was born in Prague. In 1939, he escaped Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. (His parents and brother Hans were all murdered by the Nazis; Grunzweig's first photograph, made in 1926, was a portrait of Hans.) Arriving in the U.S., he settled permanently in New York City, whose architectural forms, visual excitement and relentless pace would inform and inspire his photography throughout his life. He joined the newly formed United Nations and worked there -- in communications, media and public relations -- until his retirement in 1974. One of his best known images is "Between Heaven and Earth,” a terrific shot of a window cleaner at the United Nations building that won U.S. Camera magazine’s first prize in 1951. In 1964, he won the Saturday Review first prize for his photograph of architect Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport. Grunzweig returned to Prague three times between 1969 and 1983 and again in 1991 and in 1998. His last visit was for the opening of a retrospective show of his work, the first exhibit of his photography in the city of his birth. He died just short of his 99th birthday.
