I know I should definitely talk to him but I just wanted a general idea of what an "overnight" was according to someone with more experience than me.

It all depends what you work out with your guy. Typically, an overnight will start early evening and go until morning. The exact times, what you do, what you want, his expectations for sleep, etc., should be clearly communicated with the provider before you schedule.
