In 1975, a cat co-authored a physics paper. Just as Jack H. Hetherington prepared to publish his work, a colleague pointed out that he'd used "we" rather than "I", despite being the only author. Not wanting to edit his paper, he added his cat (pictured) as a second author. source -

The freaking contract doesn't protect you is the idea that people (some of whom have a passing knowledge of law) are trying to explain here. You don't agree, fine.
-
Apparently @Gar1eth got it through, though, otherwise the question wouldn't have been raised. Waiting to see his response to your comment.

But you have the ability to do that in relative safety. Not everyone does - some women, people of color and disabled people have had bad experiences with app-based rides because of who they are. I don't have a smartphone so I can't use apps anyway, but if I could I might specify only female drivers. Besides, I know their business model and ethics are dubious (Uber especially). The goal is to undercut taxi service, at which point prices can be raised. Drivers are not making out; rather, it's the owners and execs of the companies who are reaping the benefits of an admittedly user-friendly system. Unfortunately, they are engaged in predatory (i.e., below cost) pricing and skirting the accountability and regulations that come with public taxi service.

What unwise choice? Drinking alcohol with someone she had built up a comfort level with? Isn't that tantamount to saying men are untrustworthy and women should just get used to it and act accordingly? Which makes "women are safe" an odd thing to say in the same post. Surprisingly, I agree with you otherwise.

At a guess, FOSTA/SESTA at work again.

I would rather address the underlying issue than come up with more and more elaborate and tortured scenarios for escaping putative liability. Besides, a contract to alter an arguably illegal transaction into a legal one is no more enforceable than the initial understanding was.

I'm not so sure. Looks like extortion to me, except the person's offering to pay it voluntarily.

I wasn't sure Lucy Liu could do Watson justice, because the emotional range of her previous roles was pretty limited, but I was wrong. It wasn't her acting that was the problem but the limits of the roles themselves. I'm a fan. Once Sherlock started mocking part of its fanbase with the 1st episode of the third series/season, I was pretty much done. I watched S3 and the Victorian special but nothing since.

Wow, I think they are friends, and quite close friends - Joan says things to Sherlock no one else does, and often motivates him to change - but it's totally platonic. The show doesn't dramatize most of their non-work related interactions, but why should it? We do see them discuss food, the state of the house and their romantic relationships, and Clyde. If they were just work colleagues and not friends there would be no reason for Joan to move back in.

20% Of Men Are Having Sex With 80% Of Women
+ quoththeraven replied to + Avalon's topic in The Lounge
Oh, it's been around for awhile. Elliott Rodger of Santa Clara fame - the 2014 murders mentioned above - spouted the same ideology and killed because of it. They're sick and so is their misogynist ideology, under which women owe them sex. -
I don't know. Was the trans woman at my church who remained married to her wife lesbian after transitioning? Did her wife become lesbian then too? Or did they love each other enough to stay together despite the change in circumstances? (It's a United Methodist church. The above is probably why it supports changing official church doctrine prohibiting sexually active non-heterosexuals from being church leaders. Meanwhile, the Baptist church I grew up in has been an accepting and welcoming church for 20 years.) I realize this is a somewhat different situation, but still. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to use the term pansexual. Pause to say there was a big fight recently over which term or category is more progressive and less transphobic: pansexual or bisexual, apparently brought on by Janelle Monae coming out as pansexual.

I'm a fan too. I skipped out on the 1st season at the time because it seemed like a ripoff of BBC Sherlock and because I didn't have faith that they'd keep Holmes and Watson platonic (I'm cool with a male/male Holmes/Watson pairing, but not a male/female one), but Sherlock imploded after the second season. I now think Elementary is truer to the spirit of the original. I don't mind the dead bodies. In American TV/pop culture, they're considered necessary to raise the stakes, also to justify the police bringing Holmes in and that squad being involved anyway. Besides, I've watched serial killer shows like Criminal Minds, The Following and Hannibal. Elementary is a walk in the park by comparison. YMMV.

Are There Any Phrases, Expressions You Hate?
+ quoththeraven replied to + Avalon's topic in The Lounge
"Concerning" to mean "of concern." -
At some point that becomes incomprehensible gibberish, but where that line is differs, I suppose.
-
That's not what caused his death, in a "but for" cause sense. It was the fall and leaving him without medical attention, unless I am woefully misremembering the facts. I'd have to go back to the description of what happened, but there's individual responsibility here, too. Did they pour alcohol down his throat? Was showing up a choice to drink? In other words, was alcohol ingestion foreseeable based on what he knew beforehand? Looks to me like involuntary manslaughter is an overcharge. Either overcharging is wrong (and borderline unethical when used to leverage a plea, which may or may not be the case here) in every case or it's not, and if it's not we are trashing the rule of law just as effectively as Trump is.

Has there ever been a proposed "standard" for post titles?
+ quoththeraven replied to MisterMike's topic in The Lounge
Because being able to post here impacts their business, whereas there's less incentive for client compliance. Annoying that side of the equation is likely to drive people elsewhere rather than result in compliance. -
Also consider occupational therapy, which despite the name is much more about function than work, if your upper body (neck, shoulders, arms, hands, wrists) is affected. I have lower and upper body issues, and occupational therapy was more helpful for the upper body issues than physical therapy ever was. I even had a physical therapist do work that screwed me up so badly I had to return to occupational therapy for relief.

Also consider occupational therapy, which is a bit ofva I really need to look into the question of where NJ stands on medical marijuana now that Christie is no longer governor. It was authorized by statute but his administration was engaged in slow walking implementation.
