As Oliver said, viral lesions can be shed even when there is no discernible lesion. Low amount of virus but nonetheless possible.
As to carrier states, yes, many people can be carriers (without being infected themselves) and can spread the virus.
A virus as ubiquitous as HSV1 doesn't get to this point without asymptomatic people spreading it.
If everyone thought about the risk of HSV1 when kissing ANYONE, escort, client, brother, sister, and on down the line, there would be no kissing done, period!
All we can do is not kiss when there is an obvious lesion and hope the carrier will say something if he/she is in the midst of the "aura" described above.
I add in titers for HSV1 and 2 when i have blood work done even tho I have never had any symptoms of each.
