With new guys, they can be settling into a "persona". With well-established guys, I'm more suspicious that they are, as you say, trying to flee bad reviews/etc.

True. I usually check out new listings in Detroit (of which there are few). Occasionally I'll get a message from a guy who, after seeing his full ad, is totally not my type. I usually just say "Thanks! I'll contact you if I'm ready to hire", rather than "sorry, not interested". I don't want to bother with the "Then why did you click on my ad?" dialogue.
