    Post-mortem etiquette

It was fairly easy when my mom died suddenly at age 92 two years ago. My sister had been helping her pay bills and I did her taxes for the last few years. The only problem was stock certificates. Some stocks had split, so she didn’t have all the stock certificates. Another stock certificate was missing. When we turned them in, we opened a brokerage account, but they didn’t transfer all the shares. The broker had to fill out more forms to request the missing shares. We put the stock without the certificate on-line and as soon as it went on line, I sold it and deposited the check in the estate account. I’m still reading letters that her mother wrote to the family from college in about 1910. I found a wedding invitation for my cousin’s parents in 1942 and sent it to her. Seems like Mom saved everything.
  2. As my pappy used to say, James Garner was my favorite Maverick brother on my favorite TV series.
  3. Long ago newspapers wrote obituaries and birth announcements and engagement announcements and weddings. Now my newspaper only has death notices with only name of deceased, age, city, and who is handling funeral arrangements. Obituaries could easily cost $1,000. The Sunday paper has at least two pages of obituaries. My mom passed away two years ago. I've moved into her house, but I still get mail from people who'll pay cash for the house so they can flip it. People still read death notices and obituaries. If you don't know all your parent's friends, just one of them reading the obituary will spread the news.
  4. If you go late at night (after midnight) on a weekend, it's often very busy and you may get on a waiting list if you want a room. Most guys wear a towel that the bathhouse provides around their waist. Some bring sandals so they aren't walking around barefoot. The floors aren't always super clean. Walk all over the place and get the lay of the land first.
  5. Does this mean LGBTQ will soon be LGBIQ?
  6. My Mom's estate was about $500,000 and we paid the lawyer about $15,000. I was executor and was entitled to almost as much by statute, but didn't charge anything.
  7. This is crazy. The World Bridge Federation enforces drug testing only because it wants to be in the Olympics, which will never happen. I was in Orlando when Helgamo failed the drug test, but they weren't testing those playing in the senior events (age 60+). Bridgewinners.com has dozens of comments about this.
  8. I've never been to the Palm Springs meeting, but if I come, I'll try to join your bridge game.

    Exchanging Shoes

Payless Shoes is in bankruptcy. They’re having a going out of business sale. Yesterday my friend went to their store and grabbed a pair of shoes from the size thirteen section and bought them. When he got home, he discovered they were size 11. Today we went back to the store with the shopping bag with size 11 shoes. My friend got in line. I told him to grab a pair of size 13 shoes to exchange, so he did. When he got to the cashier, he showed her the size 11 and size 13 shoes that he wanted to exchange. She said there were no refunds or exchanges per the sign, but she’d call the manager. While we waited, he put the size 13 shoes back in the shopping bag. The cashier came back and said the manager said he couldn’t exchange the shoes. My friend said it was their fault that the size 11 shoes were on the size 13 shelf and he wanted to talk to the manager. The cashier said the manager wasn’t in today; once you leave the store you can’t make an exchange. I told her I’d write to the local newspaper. So we left with the size 13 shoes.
  11. You don't understand why this is fake news?

  13. If you want to celebrate today, it's Benjamin Franklin's birthday and my mom's birthday.
  14. Mom told her eight year old daughter to crawl under a stopped train to get to the bus stop. Turned into a tragedy. https://www.fresnobee.com/latest-news/article223271110.html
  15. Perhaps because he models clothes, and clothes don't come in weight sizes.

    Bread In A Can

I remember eating it long ago, also topped with baked beans. I'm thinking that I should try it again.
  17. Apartment 3-G disappeared from my newspaper about 30 years ago. I didn't know it still exists.
  18. Wow! I retired last week after 44 year but I've never seen this thread. I spent today reading it all. I am a fraternal twin. Our parents wanted us to be separate persons, so we were only together in fifth grade, eighth grade, and very few high school classes.
  19. I like the Green Lantern. I was visiting DC and went there 24 years ago. They gave me a coupon for a free drink, but I didn't have time to use it. When I got home, I showed the coupon to the bartender at the Red Lantern, and he honored it.
