  1. Yes, of course, those who pursue advanced degrees in history must be able to read foreign languages, especially French. I enjoyed a graduate school seminar on 18th century European history and later the causes of The First World War Actually, I was a terrible student and always regretted living on campus and tempted and, looked forward to every distraction.

  3. The Brits were on our side in world war Two. A beleaguered nation, more or less on its own after France fell to Germany. With Benita Mussolini and Francisco Franco supporting Germany

  5. I had five years of French in highschool and college. Torture, hardly exercise. Switched over to history, where the French helped for research. And I no longer had to speak French
  6. Yes, it is because people can walk right up to the tomb and lay flowers. Until yesterday only presidents could participate to that degree.. a significant change..if only for two days...but stay tuned.

  8. This morning The Washington Post is streaming the people laying flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. A sign of remembered grief.
