"Take Me Along"
As with many of the musicals on my list, the cast album is more memorable than the show. Gleason was wonderful and did not add any "improvements."
At the time (1960), I had not read "Ah, Wilderness." It was a once in a lifetime cast, which is why it has not been successfully revived. Mary Martin won a Tony Award that year in the Female category for best performance in a musical. Her role was much more difficult. Eight times a week, she had the responsibility for keeping "The Sound of Music" on track for children and adults in the audience. Ethel Merman in "Gypsy" deserved the Tony Award. But, I understand why Mary Martin won; I would have voted for her myself.
I am sorry I do not remember more about "Take Me Along."
I saw the Boston try-out of "Take Her She's Mine," so Ashley may have still been working on her role. Streisand in "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" literally stopped the show during the Boston tryout performance I saw. The same thing happened with Newman in "Subways Are For Sleeping."
