Ok, ok, let's not be so hasty about ruling out options.

I'm relatively new here, but posted the question because in several chats that I've had, I thought, "I bet they'd be a riot to grab a coffee/drink with."

I'll be headed there in the next month or two, and when I searched on RM, only two hits came up for the entire city, everyone else was 50+ miles away. Would love to hear any reviews or suggestions for the area.

For me, there are three categories: masseur; masseur with extras; escorts. I don't assume every masseur is an escort. Similarly, even if he listed massage and CMT training on his profile, I wouldn't book Austin Wolf to work on a spasm near L4/L5. I understand being offended if assumptions have been made, but I also firmly believe that where, and how, you present yourself, is really the determining factor of how you'll be viewed. Regarding the OP, honestly, most escort ads intimidate me, and I'd rather hook up on my own merits, while I still can. Masseurs with extras though, I like that I'm actually getting a massage, but knowing it can go further if I like the vibe, and I do go into the appointment hopeful that it will go farther, which I wouldn't do if he was strictly a "masseur".

On the flip-side, what your rate for having yours sucked?

You're not wrong. But when you don't discover guys until you're 40, and also discover you're not a top, that straightforward advice isn't as simple to follow.

The thing where they're 1-10 feet away, happens to me a lot in hotels. If they're close enough, I sometimes jokingly ask them if they're hiding under my bed. It's a fun icebreaker. For me, I usually block if we've been chatting for a while, and then they spring on me that they charge. There have been a few guys that I thought about offering to pay, to possibly change their minds, but it's otherwise always been free for me.
