Don’t feel like an idiot.  Stuff like this happens every so often.  This is one of the reasons most of us on here always warn about: Never, ever pay up front. Ever.  It prevents things like this.
Don't be discouraged though.  Most people aren’t like that.

I'm sorry this happened to you. There are a lot of great guys working as escorts, and it's unfortunate you hired one who was not. We've all had these learning experiences, and while yours was probably one of the more expensive learning experiences, thank goodness he was not violent or did not create problems for you.
Here's hoping your second booking will be everything you want it to be.

As one of my gay elders told me after I was fooled by the whole "I'm in the closet, my roomie doesn't know" turned into the roomie being the long time bf.  I was shocked that after 10 years of being a fairly weary street smart out gay....  
My friend knew there was nothing to do but crack a joke and tell me to move on.  (Faking an Irish accent) "well Ladee, it appears you have been taken"  "nothing you can do. Block his number block everything and never look back." 
Learn from it, and be thankful he went for the quick pay day.  Rather than a long bleeding your wallet and heart dry. 
 

Stop beating yourself up over this.  I know it sucks and I have stories of my own just like this.  I think all of us on this forum have been burned at some point.  I mean if you fly enough your bound to have a flight canceled or your luggage lost every now and then.  The good thing is because this has happened to you you're going to be even more savvy from now on.  Just like the airline analogy frequent flyers know all the ins and outs of any problems that come up while traveling.  The next hire you have you'll be ready for any potential issues.

The good news is, you did the right thing and came here to warn others.
