The 78th Oscar Ceremony was "interesting" in many respects and although I've seen NONE of the films nominated for Best Picture, I am fascinated by all the anticipation, hoopla and ultimately "dishing" that goes on about the dresses, the shoes, the jewelry, the hair, etc., etc.

My Comment/Question: Lauren Bacall appeared and introduced a montage about something---I don't even remember what. What I DO remember was how "pained" I was watching her trying to get through her presentation. Either she is not physically well, or the teleprompter was unreadable or she was drunk--something was definitely wrong.

Why have there been no comments from anybody in the media about this? I don't get it. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I know she is one of those bigger than life people called "icons" but.....someone should have told her or her publicist or whoever that she was just not "up to it."

Sami..It's called Class..At 82, anyone who saw the Charlie Rose Interview knows she still has it all! Definitely she was the Best choice for the "Film Noir" Segment! Most of her Peers of that Time.. have Passed On.

IMHO. She is one of the Few, IF Any Hollywood Women, who have never bothered with the Vanity of Getting any work done. What you see is what you get!

There is No Actress around with that "Voice" either, Sadly the young ones can only depend on their Bodies...Except Maybe Charlize! LOL

Some of us looking for "Perfection", I guess just have to look in the Mirror! LOL :7

Actually, one of the reviewers noted that Bacall and other presenters had difficulty with the teleprompter. She faltered a lot at the beginning, but ever the pro, she recovered, and covered up with some characteristic sidelong takes.

After over thirty years living in New York, I finally realized the opportunity to see her in person last October. She was coming out of a bank near the Dakota where she lives. She was with her doggie. She looks terrific and moved with great energy. I did not attempt to even say hello, look at her or smile. I undertand she guards her privacy very carefully and why shouldn't she, or anyone. Besides, I'd like to keep the image of one of my favorite icons intact. I've spoken or encountered others celebrities, who shall remain nameless solely in the interests of my privacy. In many cases it takes only a sentence or two before someone's image starts cracking.

Now if you really want to dish someone's appearance, how about describing John Travolta???? No wonder he got married.

Then there was Ben Stiller's moment, one of the all-time embarassments ever to thud across a stage. How could he even consider doing this?

And how about Stiller's pal Luke Wilson's diction? Was he trying to outdo Tony Curtis? He'd have been better off doing Tony Curtis. Maybe he did and something stuck in his mouth.

Personally I never understood Stiller's Dumb Ass Schtick.

BUT I do believe he hit a New All Time Low,in the Green Leotard's

It's Sad when they will do ANYTHING for a GIG!

Well at least his Father & Mother have Talent! LOL :7

Bacall on her way out of the theater:

"The damned lights were in my face. I couldn't see anything. It was too bright."

Vilanch in response:

"Yes dear, I had a few pairs of sunglasses in my bag if you needed them -- you should have asked."

Bette Davis had similiar problems at the Academy Awards near the end of her life (1987 or 1988). I believe Davis presented the best actor award. The winner was not present. Director Robert Wise accepted the award. Davis had been given a long introduction to Wise to read. She read the introdution at the same time Wise was accepting the award for the absent actor. Sad.

Live television is often unkind to aging living legends, sunglasses or not.

That's actually believable. She was unsteady walking to the podium, like she couldn't see where she was going.

Live TV can be unkind to ANYONE. Just ask the cast of Will & Grace. ;-)

I almost feel bad for Ben Stiller ...

"I'm blowing Spielberg's mind right now....

Spielberg: ::shaking his head:: "no you're not."

Anyway, this is only second hand but according to one of the writers during rehearsals Bacall was having trouble reading off the script and as he approached to help she snapped, "Don't you dare point just read it to me."

It's one thing to be a living legend who is having a little bit of trouble but to be too proud for assistance is digging her own grave so to speak.

I'm relieved that Ms. Bacal is healthy and well at 82. I was not criticizing her as a person, rather "squirming" in discomfort for her obvious difficulty. She did walk slowly to the speaker's area and after seeing Jennifer Garner nearly fall on her ass, her caution is understandable. Thanks to those who defended her and gave plausible reasons for her introduction to the film noire montage.

I,as I have stated before ,do not watch most of the award shows.

However-I just have to wonder why they always rely upon Gil Cates?I have seen some of his theatre productions at the Geffen and I was not impressed.

Maybe they could just try someone new next year?

And I will always remember Bette Davis SCREAMING R-O-B-ERT WISE!

And Mr.Wise(who was having his own senior moments a few years later when I heard him speak during a screening of Citizen Kane)Just staring at her like he was waiting for the guys with the net to fetch her.

Isn't Cates the only director in modern history to end the show (relatively) on time? I thought I read that somewhere.

That alone gives him job security. :p

My favorite Betty B moment happened in Toronto many years ago. I was visiting there for Xmas from Montreal and a friend of mine took me to the Royal Alex on Xmas day afternoon to see her in Applause. We sat in the front row and there she was on stage for a couple of hours, not more than 20 feet in front of us. I will always remember the time I spent Christmas with Bacall. I was always amazed that they would actually do a performance on the 25th - but I guess when you're far from home, it beats spending it in a hotel room.
